On the afternoon of February 5, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) called on people to be cautious because heavy snowfall was forecast in the Kanto-Koshin area, including the capital Tokyo, from the afternoon of February 5 to the night of February 6.
A developing low pressure mass moving east from the southern coast of Honshu threatens to bring heavy snowfall, mainly in the mountainous Kanto-Koshin region and surrounding areas. If temperatures are lower than forecast, warning-level heavy snowfall is also possible in the plains, including Tokyo's 23 wards.
All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines Co. have decided to cancel a total of 62 flights to and from Haneda Airport on the afternoon of February 5. Meanwhile, East Japan Railway Company (JR East) urged people to monitor train schedules for updates as trains may be suspended or significantly delayed.
According to the JMA, the maximum snowfall as of 6:00 a.m. on February 6 is expected to be 30 cm in the mountainous areas of the northern Kanto region, north of Tokyo and the Koshin region in central Japan; 20 cm in the plains of the northern Kanto region, as well as areas from Hakone in Kanagawa Prefecture, southwest of the capital, to Tama in western Tokyo and Chichibu in neighboring Saitama Prefecture, and 7 cm in the plains of the southern Kanto region.
