Warning about fake tax agency apps to appropriate property

July 30, 2023 12:26

Recently, there has been a rise in fake tax agency applications that aim to steal personal information and bank account information for the purpose of appropriating assets.

According to Hanoi City Police, when taxpayers install fake "General Department of Taxation" software and applications, the subjects use AI artificial intelligence technology such as deepfake, deep voice... to create fake videos of tax officers to commit fraud.

If the user installs this software, there is also a risk of having the entire phone taken over. Messages and calls to the victim's phone will be controlled by the application, secretly transferred to the server managed by the subject, and will not be displayed on the victim's phone.

More dangerously, the subjects remotely take control of the user's mobile phone or computer to perform the following tasks: Compose and send SMS messages; unlock the mobile device; turn on and off the internet, access wifi; read and write contacts; read and write call history, make calls, perform account password recovery, register for Internet Banking and Smart Banking services, even change transaction limits, then access the victim's account and transfer money. In particular, OTP code authentication messages, access and money transfers are all hidden by spyware (not supported by users) and transferred to scammers without the phone owner's knowledge.

In the face of the above situation, the Department of Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention - Hanoi City Police recommends that people absolutely do not download or install tax authority applications through unofficial links or instructions sent via text messages, emails... Users do not allow any individual to directly access their computers or phones to support the installation and use of tax authority software.

When installing applications, people need to carefully check the information about the application, access rights and features of the application before downloading and installing; avoid installing applications that require permission, file access, message access, screen control. In case of receiving messages on social networking platforms and unusual calls or signs of fraud in general, related to the tax sector in particular; people need to promptly report to the police to prevent and handle according to the provisions of law.

In addition to the above form, according to the Hanoi Tax Department, recently there have been calls to businesses from the following phone numbers: 0906.237.207, 0904.947.468, 0962.170.568, 0971.353.069, 0911.698.356, 0946.100.620, 0966.217.199, 0394.714.349, 0964.364.282... claiming to be officials and civil servants of the City Tax Department to solicit and entice businesses to buy books, documents, sign sponsorship contracts for printing and publishing books or publications honoring businesses, tax handbooks, and establishing tax support funds...

The Hanoi Tax Department affirms that the tax agency has no policy nor does it send officials to make phone calls, fax or bring books to sell to taxpayers. All documents and materials are provided free of charge by the tax agency and are fully posted on the tax agency's website at: http://hanoi.gdt.gov.vn. Training programs organized by the tax agency are free of charge and invitations will be sent to taxpayers.

Therefore, taxpayers should be vigilant and continue to coordinate information, promptly report fraudulent behavior to the police at all levels or the Hanoi Tax Department to have coordinated measures, promptly handle subjects impersonating tax officials, tax authorities to illegally profit.
