After smoking e-cigarettes, four 9th grade male students in Quang Ninh felt weak in the legs, dizzy, tired, and had difficulty breathing and were taken to the emergency room.
Doctor Tran Thi Hong Ngan, Department of Dialysis and Nephrology, Bai Chay Hospital (Quang Ninh), said on April 13 that 4 15-year-old male students were hospitalized yesterday.
According to the patients, 1 hour before entering the hospital, the 4 children used an electronic cigarette of unknown type and origin. Afterwards, they felt dizzy, uncomfortable all over, weak, trembling hands and feet, chest tightness, shortness of breath, nausea, and vomiting. Upon entering the hospital, the patients were given intravenous fluids according to the protocol and continued to be monitored in the Kidney Dialysis Department.

Dr. Ngan said that the solution cartridge in electronic cigarettes usually contains nicotine, flavoring agents, propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin.
Nicotine is highly addictive, increasing the risk of alcohol, drug, and other substance use.
In particular, nicotine can affect brain development in adolescents and can even cause fetal damage (leading to low birth weight and increased risk of premature birth). New generation cigarette smoke contains carcinogens, increasing the risk of lung cancer, laryngeal cancer, stroke, cerebral hemorrhage, stomach cancer, etc.
To identify children using e-cigarettes, Dr. Ngan pointed out signs such as children coughing, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing; or children often showing signs of anxiety, irritability, and even a tendency to participate in risky behaviors.
In addition, parents should note that seeing strange objects in the form of tubes, USBs, or smelling unusual scents in the house or child's room may be signs that the child is using e-cigarettes.
In addition to the recommendation to stay away from smoky environments and not use traditional or new generation cigarettes, Dr. Ngan noted that if after using e-cigarettes there are signs of slow exposure, drowsiness, difficulty breathing, poisoning or other unusual symptoms, go to a medical facility immediately.
