The first successful kidney transplant surgery at Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital

On June 6, 2023, with the support of experts from Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital successfully performed the first kidney transplant from a pair of blood relatives, brothers from Kien An, Hai Phong. The patient is a male, born in 1991, with end-stage chronic kidney failure, requiring dialysis 3 times/week for a year now.

The kidney donor was the patient's brother, born in 1988. Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital used the most modern machinery and equipment for the transplant. Doctors performed laparoscopic surgery to remove the kidney from the donor, then transplanted it to the recipient using specialized techniques. After more than 4 hours of surgery, the kidney transplant was successful, the donated kidney began to secrete urine. After the surgery, the transplanted pair was resuscitated and given special care, strictly following the infection control, resuscitation and post-transplant care procedures by a team of well-trained experts.

Seven days after surgery, the transplanted pair had fully recovered. The patient after the transplant was in good health, happy, able to walk independently, eat well, take care of personal hygiene, and urinate normally. Kidney function tests returned to normal.
