The Kyiv Independent newspaper quoted the Polish Air Force Operations Command as saying that on the morning of March 24, the country had mobilized fighter jets to protect its airspace in the context of Russia carrying out a large-scale attack using drones and missiles targeting the western region of Ukraine.

“Poland has activated all necessary procedures to ensure the safety of its airspace and the Polish Air Force Operations Command is constantly monitoring the situation,” the Polish Air Force Operations Command said in a statement on social network X.

“Polish and allied aircraft have been activated, which may lead to increased noise levels, especially in the southeastern part of the country,” the statement added.

Russia launched a major airstrike on Ukraine on Sunday morning, prompting a nationwide air alert and orders for citizens not to leave their shelters. Reports on social media suggested the attack was significantly larger than others in recent days and weeks.

Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on the Telegram messaging app that there had been an explosion in the capital after the regional military authorities said air defence systems had repelled the attack.

Witnesses told Reuters they heard explosions and saw several airborne weapons being shot down. Video on social media showed crowds of people taking shelter in the Kiev metro.

The attack came a day after a terrorist attack on the Crocus City Hall theater in the Crocus City shopping and performing arts center, which, according to the editor-in-chief of Russia's RT news agency Margarita Simonovna Simonyan and Russia's Baza news site, had killed at least 143 people as of the evening of March 23 (Vietnam time).

Although the international terrorist organization Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the attack, the US asserted that IS was fully responsible, and Kiev officials repeatedly denied involvement in the incident, according to Reuters news agency, there are signs that Russia is pursuing a connection between the suspect group and Ukraine.
