From the initial 3 sao, up to now Mr. Bui Van Dot (right) has more than 12.8 hectares of concentrated rice production.

The Pioneers

Taking reporters to visit the lush green rice fields in An Cuc village, Mr. Bui Van Cuong, Chairman of Kien Quoc Commune People's Committee, shared that in previous years, many households in the commune, especially in Cuc Thi village, abandoned their fields due to low income from rice cultivation. Faced with this situation, with the encouragement of the government and many local organizations, some farmers have boldly gathered abandoned fields to produce concentrated commercial rice.

Mr. Bui Van Dot's family in Cuc Bo village is one of the pioneers in land accumulation in the commune. From his family's 3 sao, Mr. Dot is now cultivating 12.8 hectares of B6, Q5, and yellow sticky rice... earning hundreds of millions of dong each year. Mr. Dot said: "Fragmented production is not economically efficient compared to working for a company, which is the underlying reason why people are bored with rice fields. Therefore, I have asked to rent the fields, invested in machinery, and determined to get rich from rice."

Meanwhile, Mr. Nguyen Trong Thom's family in An Cuc village chose to combine fish production with rice cultivation. In 2015, after renting the field, Mr. Thom's family invested billions of dong in electricity and road construction to an area of 15 hectares to grow rice and raise fish in floating ponds. The production facility was invested in a methodical, clean and green manner, making many people unable to imagine that this entire area was previously abandoned fields, overgrown with weeds.
“Most of the abandoned rice fields are low-lying areas, making it difficult to cultivate. If only rice is grown, income is very unstable. Raising fish combined with rice cultivation helps improve agricultural land, bringing economic efficiency many times higher than traditional rice cultivation. The advantage of implementing this model is that it takes advantage of available food in nature to raise fish, saving on food costs... Rice yield is high, fish is clean. However, the model requires large investment capital and members must master the techniques, especially proper water regulation," said Mr. Thom.

The rice-fish model of Mr. Nguyen Trong Thom's family in An Cuc village brings high economic efficiency.

Top in land accumulation in the district

Faced with the increasing number of abandoned fields, in addition to Mr. Dot and Mr. Thom, Kien Quoc commune also has 10 other households receiving abandoned fields for production with effective methods. The entire Kien Quoc commune currently has 354.7 hectares of agricultural land, with 12 households alone having "large fields" accumulated from abandoned fields having a total area of over 100 hectares, accounting for 28.2%. In fact, the commune still has a few acres of abandoned fields scattered in the villages due to difficulties in cultivation. In general, receiving abandoned fields from accumulated households has brought about clear results, bringing practical benefits to households, contributing to promoting the development of the local economy.

According to Mr. Nguyen Trong San, Director of Kien Quoc Commune Agricultural Service Cooperative, thanks to the active mobilization and support of the government and socio-political organizations, a number of households have accumulated land for large-scale production, eliminating the situation of abandoned land for many years in the locality. The commune also creates all conditions within its authority to help households wishing to borrow or rent land for production. Therefore, from a locality with a large area of abandoned agricultural land in Ninh Giang district, Kien Quoc commune now has the top area of accumulated land in the district.

Ms. Ha Thi Lan Anh, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ninh Giang district, assessed that the measure of eliminating fallow fields in Kien Quoc commune with concentrated production models has brought many times higher efficiency than before, helping people to be more attached to the fields. The effective models in Kien Quoc commune need to be replicated throughout the district.
