The UK government has announced it will tighten regulations on knife purchases, requiring retailers to carry out stricter age checks in a bid to stop minors from obtaining dangerous weapons.

Police cordon off the scene of a knife attack in Southport, England, July 29, 2024.

The move comes just days after 17-year-old Axel Rudakubana admitted to murdering three girls at a Taylor Swift-themed dance event last July.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the attack as one of the most painful moments in British history. Following the tragedy, an inquiry was launched to find serious flaws in the system for monitoring and preventing crime, and raised concerns about the need to overhaul lax regulations on knife sales.

Currently, UK law requires retailers to have age verification systems in place to prevent under-18s from buying knives. However, many aspects of the regulations are not clearly enforced, leaving minors with easy access to dangerous items.

Under the new draft, the UK government will require retailers to check photo identification both at the point of sale and upon delivery. Orders for knives will only be delivered directly to the person who placed the order, ensuring that packages are not left unchecked.

The measures will be included in a bill expected to be introduced to the UK legislature in the coming months, aimed at ensuring public safety and preventing similar tragedies from happening again in the future.
