Working as a manager at a company near his home with a salary of 16 million VND, but with a passion for agriculture, Mr. Nguyen Van Cong, born in 1983, in Trung village, Cam Dong commune (Cam Giang, Hai Duong) quit his job to focus on developing a fruit tree growing model.

Mr. Cong always researches and learns to develop the model.

Located about 300 meters from the asphalt road to the village, the transition area of Cam Dong commune is lush with guava, grapefruit, and apple gardens. In the middle of the vast guava garden, Mr. Cong is leading visitors on a tour and picking guavas to sell to customers. "Here, many regular customers often come to the garden to visit and buy goods, sometimes there are not enough goods to sell," Mr. Cong shared.

Previously, when working at SEICO Steel Buildings and Industrial Equipment Joint Stock Company, Mr. Cong also raised pigs, grew papaya... With a passion for agricultural development and getting rich right on his homeland, in 2019, he rented more than 3 hectares of rice fields in the commune's conversion area to grow fruit trees. Initially, he chose guava and Taiwanese apple varieties. In 2020, while working as a manager of the company with a salary of 16 million VND, he resigned to focus on developing the model.

Seeing the effectiveness, he gradually rented more area from neighboring households to expand the scale. Up to now, his model has grown to more than 8 hectares, of which 2 hectares are specialized for growing grapefruit, 2 hectares are apples, and the rest are pear guava.

To cultivate sustainably with stable output for products, Mr. Cong has applied organic farming methods, minimizing the use of pesticides. All products meet VietGAP standards. In 2023, his guava growing area was granted a growing area code. The products have stable consumption output, mainly supplying traders in the province and some neighboring provinces such as Quang Ninh, Bac Ninh, etc. In addition, many customers come to the garden to visit, directly pick the fruit to enjoy and buy right at the garden.

Recently, Mr. Cong sold 6,000 grapefruits at an average price of 14,000 VND/fruit. Out of 8 hectares, more than 4 hectares have been harvested, each year he earns a profit of about 500 - 600 million VND. The remaining 4 hectares of guava have started to be harvested this year. Every year, his agricultural model creates jobs for 3 - 4 seasonal workers.

Mr. Cong said that he used to grow Taiwanese apples, but from the beginning of 2023, he started switching to Dai Mat apples. This is an apple variety that produces large, beautiful fruit that lasts a long time, has a sweet and fragrant quality, and is popular with customers.

Many customers come to the garden to visit and buy products.

“At this time last year, apples were being harvested and there were many customers coming to buy. This year, the apples were blooming right when storm No. 3 occurred, so almost the entire apple acreage did not bear fruit, only a few were sold to regular customers. Many traders and customers contacted to order but there were no products,” Mr. Cong shared.

To meet the increasing demand of customers, in addition to the pear guava variety, he is experimenting with planting 180 seedless guava trees. In the coming time, he will continue to expand the area of Dai Mat apple cultivation. This is also a model that Cam Giang district is supporting under the pilot program to implement agricultural production models in 2024 of the district's Agricultural Service Center. Mr. Cong plans to focus on building brands along with improving product quality, moving towards packaging products, with growing area codes, and QR codes for apple and guava products.

In the process of finding ways to develop the family economy and get rich in his hometown, Mr. Cong always believes that anywhere can find opportunities for economic development. It is important that each person must always constantly seek to learn, and at the same time must persevere to overcome difficulties and obstacles, to pursue new directions of economic development.

According to Nguyen Duc Bang, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Cam Dong Commune, this is a typical economic development model of the commune. Mr. Cong has been recognized as a good production and business household at the district level for many years. In 2024, Mr. Cong was awarded a certificate of merit by the Farmers' Association of Cam Giang District for his outstanding achievements in the movement of farmers competing in production and business, uniting to help each other get rich and sustainably reduce poverty in the period of 2022 - 2024.

For his part, Mr. Cong hopes that in the coming time, all levels will continue to create favorable conditions for farmers to accumulate land, expand the area for growing high-quality, high-economic crops on abandoned land. Support the planning areas to transfer techniques on safe, high-quality agricultural production; at the same time, guide farmers to promote and consume agricultural products widely.
