“Hey friend, don’t forget, when we walk on the road, we don’t weave, when we walk on the road, we don’t stand sideways, when the light turns red, we stop quickly, when the light turns green, we go safely”... The cheerful lyrics of the song “We and Traffic Safety” resounded in the yard of Nguyen Luong Bang Primary School (Hai Duong City). The singing and clapping of more than 1,200 students of the school created a lively and exciting atmosphere to open the extracurricular program “Traffic safety is happiness for every family” jointly organized by Nguyen Luong Bang Primary School and the Traffic Police Department (Provincial Police).

After the propaganda about the regulations in the Road Traffic Law, traffic signs, ways to prevent traffic accidents, etc., students participated in a question-and-answer game about signs, commands, and knowledge about safe traffic participation. Students enthusiastically participated in answering multiple-choice questions given by the traffic police officers.

Not only at Nguyen Luong Bang Primary School, from the first weeks of the new school year 2023-2024, schools and traffic police forces throughout the province have coordinated to organize propaganda and implement extracurricular programs on traffic safety. For each level of education, the content and propaganda program are built with different methods to suit the age and attract the active participation of students. Traffic safety propaganda content is also integrated into classroom lessons, some schools also post on their fanpages. Propaganda is also concretized and made vivid by skits, contests, etc.

Quang Minh Secondary School (Gia Loc) is located near National Highway 38B, most students ride bicycles to school. In August 2023, the section from km 9+400 to km 11+100 of National Highway 38B through Quang Minh commune had 5 traffic accidents, killing 3 people and injuring 3 others. This area has a complicated traffic situation.

Mr. Pham Van Thuong, Principal of Quang Minh Secondary School, said that the school regularly organizes extracurricular activities related to traffic safety for all students. After the extracurricular program, multiple choice questions and situational questions related to traffic safety will be sent to Google Forms for students to complete and test their level of knowledge about traffic safety. The school established a red flag team to guide traffic flow at the school gate, guiding students to follow the right lane lines. First-time violators will be warned by the red flag team, and repeated violations will be strictly handled.

Thanks to promoting education and propaganda, in recent years there have been no traffic accidents involving students of the school.

Enhanced coordination

In March 2023, Hai Duong Provincial Police and the Department of Education and Training signed a joint program to disseminate, popularize, and educate students on legal knowledge about order and safety of road, railway, and inland waterway traffic, building a traffic culture and forming safe traffic habits for students at all levels...

As of May 2023, the province has 526 "Traffic Safety School Gate" models. School gates maintain the activities of volunteer teams, shock troops at the beginning and end of school hours, performing the tasks of guiding, directing traffic, monitoring, recording personal information of individuals not wearing helmets when riding electric bicycles, motorbikes, not strictly complying with traffic safety regulations for students, reminding parents who do not strictly comply with traffic regulations at school gates.

Currently, many schools in the province are located along national highways, provincial roads, and district roads, with high traffic density. At the beginning and end of school hours, the number of vehicles gathered at the school gate is high, posing a potential risk of traffic safety. To solve the "problem" of traffic safety on the way to school for students, all levels and sectors have implemented many solutions. The most important thing is to have coordination in monitoring, managing, propagating, and educating students to be aware of complying with traffic regulations so that their way to school is always peaceful and safe.

In the first 8 months of 2023, the province had 102 traffic accidents and collisions, killing 78 people and injuring 54. A total of 234 people were involved in traffic accidents, of which 19 were students (under 18 years old) involved in road traffic accidents. Implementing the "Peak Month of Traffic Safety for Students Going to School", from August 15 to September 14, the traffic police force of the whole province coordinated to organize 61 traffic law dissemination sessions to 35,140 students and teachers of schools in the province.
