Xiaomi makes its own mobile operating system

HyperOS is Xiaomi's attempt to create a single system that works on both smartphones and IoT devices, similar to Huawei's HarmonyOS.

Xiaomi describes HyperOS, announced over the weekend, as a combination of a “highly customized Android system” and its proprietary Vela IoT platform, introduced three years ago. The new platform aims to support a wide range of smart devices, from smartphones, tablets, smartbands, smartwatches to speakers, home appliances, and other sensor- and internet-connected products.

According to Xiaomi, HyperOS is a "human-centric" operating system that aims to "bring a wide and expanding product portfolio under a single operating system, making management more centralized and easier." The company said HyperOS will first be installed on the newly launched Xiaomi 14 series phones in China, as well as smartwatches and TVs.

Before Xiaomi, Huawei developed its own operating system to avoid dependence on Google's Android. The company introduced HarmonyOS in August 2019, three months after being placed on the US Entity List. The platform is developed based on open source code and does not integrate Google services.

Huawei is preparing a bolder move with HarmonyOS Next, due to launch next year. This is considered the company's biggest attempt to completely cut off from Google's ecosystem by removing support for Android apps.

Huawei is still allowing Android apps to run on HarmonyOS devices - a way to "soften the shock" and retain users after being banned by the US. Meanwhile, the company is quietly preparing for a new journey.

"HarmonyOS has gone through four difficult years. Looking back, it was like a light boat crossing a thousand mountains," Richard Yu Chengdong, head of Huawei's consumer business, quoted a famous line from poet Li Bai at an event in September.

According to Huawei, there are currently 700 million devices running HarmonyOS with more than 2.2 million developers creating apps for the platform. Meanwhile, according to data from StatCounter, Android accounted for 70% of the global mobile operating system market share in September, while HarmonyOS had a negligible market share.

Apart from Huawei and Xiaomi, Chinese smartphone makers continue to build custom platforms based on Android. For example, Oppo has ColorOS, Vivo has OriginOS. Xiaomi smartphones now also run MIUI based on open-source Android.
