On the occasion of International Day of Happiness (March 20), the World Happiness Report 2023 was released, marking a decade of the United Nations' initiative to promote national happiness.

Vietnam's happiness index has increased 12 places, from 77th in 2022 to 65th.

The International Day of Happiness, March 20, was officially declared by the United Nations in June 2012. Since then, more and more people have come to believe that a nation's success should be measured by the happiness of its people. Promoting national happiness has become a goal of governments. Here are some people's opinions on happiness.

The World Happiness Report is a publication of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (United Nations) based on data collected from people in more than 150 countries.

The criteria assessed include: GDP per capita, social support, life expectancy, freedom to make life choices, generosity and perceptions of corruption.

The Nordic country and its neighbours Denmark, Iceland, Sweden and Norway all score highly on criteria including healthy life expectancy, per capita income, social support, low corruption, and a sense of community where people care for each other and are free to make important life decisions.

Overall, the World Happiness Report 2023 offers optimistic signs of world happiness over the past year.

Global happiness has not been affected by the three years of the COVID-19 pandemic. Benevolence is about 25% higher than before the pandemic. Benevolence toward others, especially helping strangers, increased significantly in 2021 and remained high in 2022, according to John Helliwell, one of the report's authors.

Since 2013, the United Nations has celebrated the International Day of Happiness to recognize the importance of happiness in the lives of people around the world.

Happiness is a fundamental human goal. The United Nations General Assembly has recognized this goal and called for "a more comprehensive, equitable and balanced approach to economic growth that promotes the happiness and well-being of all".

In 2015, the United Nations launched 17 Sustainable Development Goals to end poverty, reduce inequality and protect our planet – three key aspects that lead to happiness and prosperity.

The United Nations welcomes people of all ages, classes, businesses and governments to join in celebrating the International Day of Happiness.
