Tung Duong: The two words "creativity" haunted me until I died.

- After nearly 20 years of musical journey, is there anything that has changed in you?

- I am mature and have a very calm mindset. Of course, I am not enough to become a very calm and peaceful person because I still have too many ambitions to conquer with music. The two words "creativity" will always haunt me until I die. I always tell myself to be calm to be calm, to learn how to adapt to living conditions. For example, if the Covid-19 pandemic hits, we still have to continue living. Therefore, the 2 years of Covid-19 have not affected my spirit in music.

From Human 2020 to this year, I have always had music projects, always conceived musical ideas that have never run out. Sitting for a while, I think of many things I can do and make them come true. Of course, a wise person will not take on everything at once, but will do what is most suitable for the time. To see, living a positive life, everything for me will be a calm acceptance, more ups and downs.

- Are you talking about the ups and downs of a grown man?

- Ups and downs to show that men have certain experiences, as a family man they have more ups and downs and depth. Up to this point, I show the audience not in the way I showed before. The fire of music has transformed into another stage. A man also needs a lot of sophistication, not a man who only shows their strong physique. Their youthful strength will gradually run out at a certain level, but the depth, sophistication, and musical philosophies will stay forever.

I see that the Red River Quartet are all like that, Uncle Tran Tien said "The older the ginger, the more... rotten it is!" However, he said it will be a long time before he falls down. Uncle Tien wrote the song "Khong Guo Ngu" to show that people's reason is very strong. Nothing can make them fall.collapseEven when they have physical and health difficulties. They still strive constantly, still show us their movement. That makes me very emotional. So that later when I am your age, I will not worry or fear death, I only regret that I have not lived long enough to do the unfinished things for myself, my family and society, to continue my dream and fulfill my mission in this life as an artist.

- People say that Tung Duong is weird, strange, and shocking, and after nearly 20 years, that comment is still the same?

- It is still a continuous thread that is related, although it is multifaceted but still contradictory, but it is still me with all the emotions I have experienced, from strong, powerful, intense to gentle, soaring. Mature men control their emotions so as not to overdo it, causing people to be overloaded. Artistic aspirations are limitless, but emotions must control them. And if we let them float, our instinctive emotions will cause us to retreat because we lean too much towards the instinctive side. I control myself when singing, when doing artistic activities. I know how to balance, to be calm in front of everything. 20 years of lessons, experiences, training myself like that.

- Your musical personality is always considered different, does that affect your real life?

- Artists - if you are crazy, strange, or harsh, bring that into art, but in real life, live scientifically, rationally, simply, and compassionately. Painters, for example, are reclusive people who may not appear, but their whole soul is reflected in their paintings and products. I consider myself a very open-minded person, looking at big things, not at the small, fragmented details, so I live without holding grudges, always knowing how to treat people, knowing the past and the future, and valuing loyalty. Each artist should strive to be a cultural figure to inspire positive things for the public, those will be things that will last forever, not just superficial things.

- What makes Tung Duong most proud?

- That is the change in depth within oneself, always a series of contradictions, denying oneself, never being satisfied with oneself. Only then can one see that it is an improvement. Maybe in 20, 30, 40 years, one will think differently from the present, but Duong will still have the mindset of a multifaceted artist, the opposite sides of oneself to move.

Many people have died because of the instinctive sensitivity of artists. Being too sensitive and sentimental will not help you overcome the difficulties in life. Artists are always a mass of contradictions, and artists are always in a state of uncertainty, always feeling both full and uncertain. If an artist says he is at peace and fulfilled, it will be difficult for him to develop further. There are light and dark sides in every person, and especially in artists, those two sides are always in conflict and the victory will lean towards reason, the artist will know what is most appropriate.

- What about missing or regretting?

- If I say I don't regret it, it's not true. Because there are opportunities that come and go, maybe if you seize the opportunity, you can go further. However, everything is only relative, or there is a big push that is worth mentioning. Finding an artist who can go out into the world, succeed in another country is also the dream of many Vietnamese artists. So every day I still have to improve my English, play the guitar, read books, draw, appreciate paintings, learn many other things, so that I always have passion, to be like a red thread connecting art groups together. Knowledge is endless, the thing that is very important for an artist in creativity is to have a rich imagination.

- You often share about Mac Lam, does your son influence you in part?

- I think any man will truly mature when he becomes a father. Because he has a more multi-dimensional view of life, knows how to give and not just receive. He has to sacrifice more, worry more. He sees his responsibility for life and family as greater. The challenge for any artist, busy as Tung Duong or any artist, is to become a good parent, because when their fame comes, it also has a negative impact on their children.

So we have to be very alert and spend time with our children in the most fair and equitable way, we cannot impose expectations on our children, that should not be done. For me, we still have to learn to become good parents so that we can learn from our children, children teach us lessons about our own lives. Know how to guide and teach our children good things, right reasons, and values.

- Is that the reason why you are more open, doing things you have never done before like sharing the stage with young singers Bui Lan Huong, Van Mai Huong... covering million-view, trendy songs?

- That is proof that Tung Duong is still a person who knows how to listen and experience. Of course, I do not experiment with or cover everything from the youth. I still sing what is suitable to bring into the world of the youth. However, I will not sing in a naive way like that age, like the youth. I sing with the mindset of a more experienced person, in the right mindset, in my age. Singing Anh oi o lai is a challenge from musician Ho Hoai Anh: Does Tung Duong dare to sing that song?, Duong said why not? Sing then sing, of course when singing will be true to one's thoughts with the words still the same, but the important thing is that each person has their own way of conveying so that everyone can sympathize.

- Through million-view covers, fans have dubbed Tung Duong the new “King of Hit Stealing”. What do you think?

- Actually, these are very funny titles, but honestly, I don't want to steal anything from anyone. Music is still a shared emotion, each version will have a personal feeling, a way for each person to convey. For me, the works are always strong, rolling, and will have a different way that does not repeat the way the previous person did. Covers are just another version for diversity, my different perspective can be the opposite of others.

But in reality, I will be like a fish in water and sublimate when singing songs written for myself such as: Heaven and Earth, Adam, Blind People, Night Eyes, Pregnancy, Doc Dao... When singing, I feel that my voice is very free, flying into the air, touching the infinity of space.
