The China Earthquake Networks Center said that as of 8 a.m. on January 8, there had been 488 aftershocks of magnitude 3 and 27 aftershocks of magnitude 3 or higher. Of these, 24 had magnitudes ranging from 3 to 3.9 and three had magnitudes ranging from 4 to 4.9. The strongest aftershock was located about 18 kilometers from the epicenter.

The earthquake struck on the morning of January 7 at a depth of 10 km, killing at least 126 people and injuring 188. Chinese authorities confirmed that this was one of the most damaging earthquakes in Tibet in many years.

According to preliminary reports, more than 1,000 houses collapsed and thousands of buildings were severely damaged, directly affecting about 6,900 people within 20 km of the epicenter. Local authorities evacuated more than 30,000 people to ensure safety.

In addition to the loss of life, the region’s transportation, telecommunications and power grids were also severely affected. Many major roads were cracked and disrupted rescue efforts. The Chinese government has mobilized over 1,500 rescue workers, including police, military and medical staff, to the area to search for and assist those trapped under the rubble.

Immediately after the disaster, Chinese President Xi Jinping directed relevant agencies to urgently carry out search and rescue work, provide medical treatment to the injured, repair infrastructure, and ensure daily necessities for people in the affected areas. China's National Development and Reform Commission has urgently allocated 100 million yuan to support the relief work.

Field medical stations have been set up in many areas, providing food, medicine, clean water and other necessities to people. Humanitarian organizations are also participating in the aid operation, while rescuers continue to search for missing people.

Due to Tibet's geographical location on the boundary between the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates, this earthquake not only had a serious impact in China but was also felt clearly in Nepal, India and Bhutan.

In Nepal, strong tremors were recorded in the capital Kathmandu but there were no reports of serious damage. The Mount Everest region - 85km from the epicenter - was temporarily closed to ensure the safety of tourists and local staff.

According to seismologists, Tibet and other parts of western China are frequently hit by earthquakes due to their proximity to the boundary between two major tectonic plates. A 6.2 magnitude earthquake in the neighboring region earlier this month killed more than 150 people in Qinghai and Gansu provinces.

The recording of more than 500 aftershocks following the earthquake has raised concerns about the risk of further strong tremors in the coming time. Local authorities have warned people not to return to their homes until safety notices are issued, and to continue monitoring seismic activity to promptly respond to emerging situations.

China is currently focusing on relief efforts, providing assistance to residents, and rebuilding infrastructure in the hardest-hit areas. Local authorities have warned of the risk of further strong aftershocks and urged residents to follow the instructions of rescuers to ensure their safety.
