After a 6.8-magnitude earthquake shook Dingri County in Shigatse City, Tibet Autonomous Region, on the morning of January 7, the Mount Everest Scenic Area stopped receiving visitors from 10 a.m.

Tours planned to visit the Mount Everest region have been postponed.

Visitors who want to reach Everest from Tibet must go through Dingri County, which is also the closest stop for those who want to climb the mountain. The two Base Camps on Mount Everest in China are both located in Dingri County.

A staff member at the scenic spot said the reopening time will depend on the actual situation after the aftershocks. The district's power supply has not yet been fully restored.

According to the Dingri County Culture and Tourism Authority, the hotel buildings, areas around and inside the Everest scenic area remain intact.

Located on the China-Nepal border, Everest is the world's tallest mountain at 8,840 meters. The northern part of the mountain in Tibet is expected to welcome nearly 14,000 international visitors in 2024, double the number in 2023.
