Breaking into a homeowner's house through the balcony in Hanoi, when discovered, the thief used a knife to slash the homeowner 12 times before fleeing.
On September 26, the Hanoi People's Court sentenced defendant Nguyen Minh Vui (born in 1999, in Nghe An) to 18 years in prison for murder.
According to the indictment, around 2021, defendant Vui lived as husband and wife with D.QA (born in 1998, in Nam Tu Liem, Hanoi). The young couple did not have stable jobs, had a small child, needed money for food and personal debt, so from November 14, 2022, Vui often wandered around the suburbs of Hanoi to see which houses were vulnerable and would break in to steal property.
At about 1:00 p.m. on November 17, 2022, the defendant prepared his “tools” including a knife, gloves, and a mask to go steal. Vui put the knife in his pants pocket with the intention of using it to attack the homeowner or others if discovered; at the same time, he put the gloves in his shirt pocket to erase traces when stealing property.
Defendant Vui then walked to My Dinh Bus Station and took a bus to Son Tay Town Bus Station. There, he hired a motorbike taxi to go around the area outside the bus station with the intention of looking for an opportunity to appropriate other people's property but was unsuccessful.
At about 4:00 a.m. on January 18, 2022, Vui walked past house number 621, Chua Thong street, Son Tay town and saw the second floor window of the house was open, so he had the intention of breaking into the house to steal property.
The defendant climbed onto the tiled roof of house number 619, climbed onto the balcony into house number 621. At that time, inside the house, Mr. Tran Khac Hoan (born in 1959) and his wife Bui Thi Tuyet (born in 1952) were sleeping on the bed, next to the window. Vui crawled through the window to the balcony door and found it closed. He reached through the bars to open it but could not.
Vui continued to climb to the balcony of house number 623, saw the door to the balcony of the house was open, so he slipped into the room. At this time, in the room was Mr. Nguyen Duc Minh (born in 2002) sleeping alone on the bed.
The defendant went straight into the room to search for property when Mr. Minh woke up. When he discovered the intruder, Mr. Minh shouted: “Robbery, robbery”. Vui immediately pulled out a knife and stabbed Mr. Minh 12 times in the neck, chin, chest, nape and shoulder.
On the first floor of the house, Mr. Nguyen Van Quyen (born in 1985, Minh's uncle) and Ms. Nguyen Thi Huyen (born in 1986, Quyen's wife) were sleeping and heard Minh calling for help, so they woke up, turned on the phone and called: "Minh, Minh".
Hearing Mr. Quyen's voice, the defendant found a way to run to the balcony and escaped. On November 22, 2022, Vui turned himself in to the police. As for the victim, after being taken to the emergency room, he received timely treatment and did not die, but suffered 88% health damage.
