Statistics released by Ookla Speedtest show that the download speed of Vietnam's mobile Internet network in December 2024 reached 86.96 Mbps, the highest ever and 60% higher than in September 2024. This result helped Vietnam rise 7 places compared to the previous month on Ookla's rankings, to 37th place globally.

This is also the first time that both Vietnam's mobile and fixed network categories are in the top 40. In June 2024, fixed Internet was on the list with a speed of 136 Mbps. New data from Ookla shows that this speed has now increased to 159.32 Mbps and ranked 35th globally.

According to data from the Vietnam Internet Network Information Center (VNNIC), mobile Internet speed is 67.85 Mbps, while fixed Internet is 130.91 Mbps. Despite the growth, mobile Internet still has a large gap between downlink and uplink. The average upload speed recorded by both VNNIC and Ookla tools is around 25 Mbps.

The last three months of the year are also the period when domestic network operators are commercializing 5G, continuously increasing mobile Internet speeds. In information released in mid-December, Viettel said that about 70% of subscribers in the 5G coverage area have used the new generation connection, equivalent to 4 million users. VNPT announced the commercialization of the 5G network on December 20, on the 3,700-3,800 Mhz frequency band. Many people measured with the Speedtest application, showing that the speed can reach 1.5-1.9 Gbps, more than 10 times that of the 4G network.

According to the Digital Infrastructure Strategy approved by the Government in October 2024, Vietnam aims to have 5G mobile services in 100% of provinces, cities, high-tech zones, concentrated information technology zones, research and development centers, innovation centers, industrial parks, international stations/seaports/airports by 2025. By 2030, 5G mobile broadband networks will cover 99% of the population.

Across all markets tracked by research firm Ookla, the average mobile download speed was 62.79 Mbps, while the fixed speed was 96.45, both lower than Vietnam. In these two categories, the UAE led the way with mobile speeds of 453.87, while Singapore led the fixed speed with 330.98 Mbps.
