While football players more or less receive Tet bonuses, Vietnamese athletes in other sports almost... return home empty-handed during Tet.
Unlike other professions, sports in general and football in particular are often not happy when it comes to Tet bonuses. Even many top V-League teams up to this point still do not have Tet bonuses for players.
"Every year we get a bonus of at least half a month's salary, but this year we haven't seen anything," a player from Hanoi Club shared.
In fact, the Tet bonus of the capital team is not too important to the players, because they have a 'well-off' year thanks to their determination to win titles. Even before Tet, Hanoi won the Four Heroes Cup, receiving a bonus of 500 million VND. At the beginning of the year of the Cat, Van Quyet and his teammates can receive an additional 300 million VND if they win the National Super Cup on the 8th day of Tet.
Hanoi Club has a year of bumper titles and bonuses
Because football teams have rules for bonuses for each win and draw, the Tet bonus is basically just symbolic. Some Northern clubs give bonuses of 3-5 million VND to players, also showing their concern during the coming Tet holiday.
Meanwhile, for football teams in the Central and Southern regions, the Tet bonus is sometimes... a matter of luck. If Binh Duong Club gives its players a Tet bonus of 5 million VND, SLNA, Ha Tinh, Binh Dinh... have not seen anything yet.
Not only football players, Vietnamese athletes are also waiting for their Tet bonuses but there is little hope. Even athletes who won medals at the recently concluded National Sports Festival have not yet received their bonuses.
Vietnamese athletes have almost no Tet bonus
At the National Sports Training Centers, some athletes have to stay and train after Tet. Athletes who live far away will receive a small amount of support from the center for travel expenses and gifts. For most of the athletes who have not achieved results and young athletes, they will return home empty-handed.
"Due to the nature of my job, I will train over Tet this year and not go home," said SEA Games 31 champion Ngan Ngoc Nghia (athletics).
