On the morning of June 29, Mongolian Prime Minister Luvsannamsrain Oyun-Erdene announced that the ruling Mongolian People's Party (MPP) had won the parliamentary election on June 28.
Speaking at a press conference in the capital Ulaanbaatar hours after voting ended, with 100% of votes counted by machine, the prime minister declared that his MPP party had won a majority of seats.
Ballots are also being counted by hand to ensure accuracy and official results are expected on June 29. According to the Election Commission, voter turnout was 69.3%.
Results tallied by local media outlet Ikon based on official data showed the MPP won 68 seats, and the main opposition Democratic Party won 42 seats.
If the preliminary results are confirmed, the MPP's share of parliamentary seats has dropped from 79% in 2020 to around 54% in the last election. The small HUN party won 8 seats.
Preliminary results show that 25% of seats in the new parliament will be held by women – up from 17% in 2020. By law, parties must ensure that 30% of candidates are women.
