Every generation looks for the king of pop, but finds only the prince.

To become the king of pop to succeed Michael Jackson, names like Justin Timberlake, Justin Bieber, Jungkook or any future "prince of pop" should not be a copy of Jackson, but must be themselves.

"Jungkook Jackson", "Michael Jackson's lost son" are some of the compliments that fans of Jungkook (26 years old), the youngest member of BTS, exclaimed after watching his MV Standing Next To You.

In one scene, Jungkook wears an elaborately embroidered black vest reminiscent of Michael Jackson's famous military jacket, and his dance is clearly inspired by the king of pop's legendary moves such as "crotch grab", "moonwalk", "robot"...

Every generation looks for Michael Jackson

After Jungkook's MV was released, a fan-made clip of Standing Next To You and Michael Jackson's Smooth Criminal MV appeared on YouTube.

When placed side by side, of course we will see a big difference in class.

If Jungkook's MV is purely youthful, entertaining and pleasant, with the singer's high-pitched and clear voice, Michael Jackson's MV, despite being released 35 years ago, still exudes an unpredictable weirdness and haunting, with MJ's voice both excited, threatening and scared.

However, the strange thing is that the combination of the two MVs and two songs is quite smooth!

Ever since Michael Jackson left the family band The Jackson 5 and took the music world by storm in the 1980s, every generation has been looking forward to finding their own Michael Jackson.

In the early 2000s, Justin Timberlake emerged from the popular boy band N'Sync, and in his debut solo single Like I Love You, he was said to be deeply influenced by Michael Jackson's singing style. He also sang Rock Your Body, a song that was originally written for Michael Jackson but was rejected.

By the 2010s, the title "little Michael Jackson" was passed on to Justin Bieber.

He wrote Pray inspired by Man in The Mirror, made the album Believe inspired by Billie Jean, and even produced a duet version with Michael Jackson on the song Slave to the Rhythm.

As for the 2020s, Jungkook is now a big hope in terms of popularity, versatility, and the ability to create trends like the seniors mentioned above. What Jungkook, Timberlake, Bieber, and Jackson have in common is that they started singing and became famous when they were teenagers, even children.

Jungkook and Timberlake have another similarity with Jackson: all three are maknae members of famous bands (BTS, N'Sync, and The Jackson 5, respectively).

On social media, an audience member named all three along with Harry Styles (One Direction), Robbie Williams (Take That)... to conclude: "The youngest members of famous boy bands all made history."

But there is one thing that only Jungkook shares with Jackson: they are both black people with ambitions to conquer America - the world's largest music market, where white people still dominate. That allows their music to be rich and diverse.

Look at both Timberlake and Bieber. Their careers were once brilliant in their respective peak decades, but soon faded, and they ended up as "pop princes" and could not take over Michael Jackson's "kingly" scepter. Can Jungkook?

The Road to Succession to the King of Pop

The song Standing Next To You is included in Jungkook's debut solo album Golden, released in early November. In terms of numbers, Jungkook deserves the throne, as the album sold nearly 2.5 million copies in less than a week.

In terms of content, the 11 songs in Golden demonstrate Jungkook's vocal range. He can be gentle and soulful in ballads like Hate You or Shot Glass of Tears, or he can be fast and funky in R&B-oriented songs like 3D or Seven.

Still, the overall vibe on Golden is youthful vivacity, with even the "Too Sad To Dance" melodies being bright, with not much underlying meaning to dig into.

Not to go far, just compared to BTS's own albums, Golden is much "lighter", less experimental and less ambitious.

Jungkook's performance is smooth and seamless, but it doesn't go beyond the audience's imagination of what he can do. He doesn't compose, he doesn't produce, he doesn't have any aesthetic stamp of his own.

And Michael Jackson? Was he great on his early solo albums like Forever, Michael, and Got to Be There, which were classic soul albums? Yes. But it wasn't until Off The Wall, which twisted soul into a strangely captivating sound, turning Michael Jackson from a noun into an adjective, that he truly became king.

Quincy Jones, producer of Off The Wall, recalled that as a young promising star, Michael Jackson impressed by knowing every song and every dance move of others.

But he was no copycat. Once, Jones heard Jackson mispronounce the philosopher's name "Socrates," and Jones pointed it out to Jackson, who rolled his eyes.

“It was the wonder in his eyes that locked me in. I knew we could enter completely uncharted territory, a place that gave me goosebumps as a jazz musician,” Jones recalls.

The difference between prince and king

Smoothness and safety are only necessary for being a prince, not for being a king. The ability to imitate is not the starting point for Michael Jackson's "royalty", but the ability to surprise, to do things differently and make the audience's skin crawl. No king plays safe music.

To succeed Michael Jackson, perhaps what Jungkook or any future "pop prince" needs to do is not become Jackson, but break out to become themselves. That road is still long.
