CNN quoted a US intelligence official as saying that Iran's attack on Israel ended after about 5 hours. The US, along with Israel, monitored a series of drone and missile attacks by Iran in the late hours of April 13 (local time) and continued into April 14.

US officials said the number of missile and drone launches had decreased as time went on on April 14. However, the US remained vigilant due to concerns about new attacks from Iran.

According to two US officials familiar with the situation, US forces intercepted more than 70 drones and at least three ballistic missiles during Iran's attack on Israel.

The US Navy currently has two destroyers in the region, both guided-missile destroyers capable of intercepting missile and drone launches.

Another US official told CNN that US fighter jets were also dispatched in response to Iran's attack on Israel.

US fears Israel will rush to strike back at Iran

Quoting an unnamed Israeli official, the New York Times said any future retaliation against Iran would be coordinated with allies.

The comments came after reports that the US was concerned that Israel could strike back at Iran hastily without consulting the country.

The Israeli prime minister and the US president had earlier spoken by phone, reiterating Washington's security commitments to Tel Aviv. G7 leaders are expected to meet on April 14 to coordinate a diplomatic response to the Iranian attack.

Meanwhile, NBC News quoted anonymous US officials as saying that President Biden personally expressed concern to Prime Minister Netanyahu that Israel would try to drag the US into a larger war with Iran.

Washington is worried that Tel Aviv will start to respond to Tehran in the same way it did in the Gaza Strip war in October 2023 and the attack on the Iranian Embassy in Syria - which triggered Iran's attack early this morning.

US officials believe that Israel will not seek an all-out war with Iran, but they also admit that there is no guarantee of that belief.

Iran's allies also attack Israel

According to an Israeli military spokesman, more than 55 rockets were fired from Lebanon towards Israel in just one hour on April 14. It is unclear whether this was a coordinated action with Iran.

Hezbollah in Lebanon has previously launched several rockets in solidarity with Hamas in the Gaza Strip since the outbreak of hostilities in October 2023.

According to the latest tally by the New York Times based on information from Israeli officials, Iran has used 185 drones of various types, 110 surface-to-surface missiles and 36 cruise missiles aimed at Israel. Most were launched from Iranian territory but some were also fired from Iraq and Yemen.

Iran is believed to back Hezbollah in Lebanon, Houthi forces in Yemen and some armed groups in Iraq.

Israeli Prime Minister calls US President

According to the White House and Israeli media, US President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had a phone call while Iran was attacking Israel.

The White House website said Mr Biden assured Mr Netanyahu of "America's ironclad commitment to Israel's security".

"I told him that Israel has demonstrated its superior ability to defend and defeat even unprecedented attacks. That is the way to send a clear message to its enemies that they cannot threaten Israel's security," the White House quoted Mr. Biden as saying.

According to the Times of Israel and Al Jazeera, the Israeli government downgraded the warning for its citizens at 7:00 a.m. this morning Vietnam time, no longer requiring them to stay near areas with bomb shelters.

According to Israeli authorities, the danger from Iran's attack has basically passed.

Iranian officials said the Israeli strikes were limited in scope and accurately hit military targets in Israel. Iranian state television warned that any Israeli retaliation in the coming hours would be met with a stronger response.

Tehran is said to have put its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on high alert.

"Right now, the Iranians are waiting to see what Israel will do and whether they can keep this conflict going as it is without escalating things further," Al Jazeera asked.
