Rafael Nadal missed the chance to win his 93rd ATP title, when he was defeated quickly 3-6, 2-6 by opponent Nuno Borges on the afternoon of July 21.
Borges' 88-minute match was not too difficult as he overwhelmed Nadal in most of the sustained shots. The Portuguese player also exploited his senior's physical and movement weaknesses to frequently drop shots to score winners, or attack cross-court with left and right attacks.
Playing nearly seven hours over the previous two days had taken its toll on Nadal’s stamina. The 38-year-old dropped many difficult shots or failed to move quickly enough. He also lacked consistency in his serve, winning just 28 percent of his second-round points and dropping a total of five service games, including one double fault.
Nadal could not win his 64th clay-court title, while Borges won his first ATP Tour title at the age of 27. The Portuguese was modest after the match, saying that part of him wanted to see Nadal win like most of the audience in Bastad. "Maybe we all wanted to see Nadal lift the trophy," Borges said. "The desire to rise at the right time helped me overcome him. Of course, this is not the best version of Nadal."
Despite losing the match, Nadal had a successful tournament to prepare for the Paris Olympics. The "King of Clay" reached the final for the first time since Roland Garros 2022, and also reached the men's doubles semi-finals when partnering with Casper Ruud.
"Borges played great and deserved the win," Nadal said after the match. "I enjoyed the tennis I wanted, with many difficult and long matches. Today was another tough test from Borges to see where I am. I'm not too disappointed to lose the final, because I see many positive things."
Nadal will be in Paris next week for the Olympics on the clay courts of Roland Garros. He has already confirmed his doubles partnership with Carlos Alcaraz. The draw for the tennis matches at the Paris Olympics will take place on July 25, with the opening round of play starting two days later.
Nadal has a complete set of Olympic gold medals. He won the men's singles title at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and the men's doubles title at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
