Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh told Qatari and Egyptian mediators on May 6 that the Palestinian Islamist movement had accepted a ceasefire proposal in Gaza after nearly seven months of conflict with Israel.

In a statement posted on its official website, Hamas said: "Ismail Haniyeh, head of the Hamas Political Bureau, held telephone conversations with Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and with Egyptian Intelligence Minister Abbas Kamel to announce Hamas' acceptance of the two countries' proposal for a ceasefire."

In a related move, the White House said that in a phone call with US President Joe Biden on the same day, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu affirmed that he would ensure the opening of the Kerem Shalom crossing between Israel and the Gaza Strip to bring humanitarian aid into the land.
