A 45-year-old man went for a routine health check-up and had an X-ray that discovered a large tumor in his left lung. A few days later, he was diagnosed with cancer.
The patient is Mr. NVH, who came to the General Clinic, Phu Tho Province Center for Disease Control, for a routine health check-up. Mr. H. has a history of good health and has smoked for many years.
After being examined by doctors and assigned paraclinical tests, the chest X-ray results showed that the patient had a left lung tumor, measuring 8.48cm x 10.12cm. Immediately, the doctors advised the patient to be transferred to a higher level for specialized diagnostic techniques. The results showed that Mr. H. had lung cancer.
Specialist Doctor I Tran Thi Hong Van, Head of the General Clinic, Phu Tho Province Center for Disease Control, said that routine chest X-ray is a simple, cheap and easy method to perform. On routine X-ray films, small tumor lesions in the form of solitary nodules with a size of 1 cm can be detected.
This is considered one of the first basic methods to help doctors make early diagnoses of lung diseases.
Doctor Van recommends that people should have regular health check-ups every 6 months to detect and treat diseases early, avoiding unfortunate complications.
Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers. In Vietnam in 2020, lung cancer was the cause of nearly 24,000 new cases (14.4% of all cancer cases) and more than 20,000 deaths (18%) annually, ranking second only to liver cancer.
The vast majority of lung cancer cases are related to smoking, about 10% have never smoked.
