On September 18, Finnish President Alexander Stubb called for expanding the United Nations Security Council and abolishing the veto power of a country in this body.

President Stubb said he wanted to add his voice to calls for Security Council reform at the United Nations General Assembly in New York next week.

Specifically, Mr. Stubb will propose increasing the number of permanent members of the Security Council to 10 countries, including the current 5 permanent countries, plus 1 Latin American country, 2 African countries and 2 Asian countries. In addition, he will also propose rejecting the veto mechanism in the Security Council.

The United Nations Security Council currently consists of five permanent members (known as the P5) and 10 non-permanent members elected on a rotating basis (known as the E10). This is the highest decision-making body of the United Nations to maintain and maintain global peace, as well as prevent war and repel major challenges.

However, growing geopolitical rivalries have left the P5 deadlocked on a range of issues, from the conflict in Ukraine to the war in Gaza.

By rule, any change in Security Council membership requires a two-thirds majority vote at the United Nations General Assembly.
