While beauty fans believe Miss Charm will be worthy of the international stature as introduced, what happened in reality can only be summed up in two words: "disappointment".
Miss Charm 2023 (Miss International Beauty) is being held for the first time in Vietnam with the desire to promote culture, tourism and educational activities. The contest was announced to launch in 2019 but had to be postponed twice due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Because the President of the contest is Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Nga - CEO of Elite Company - Miss Charm received great support from the domestic audience. Many beauty fans believed that the contest would be worthy of the international stature as introduced. However, what happened can only be summed up in two words: "disappointment".
Messy, confusing camera angles
38 contestants from various countries and territories have been in Ho Chi Minh City since February 3rd to compete for the title of Miss. They have gone through the sub-competitions and are currently practicing for the final round on the evening of February 16th.
Looking at the sideline activities, it can be seen that Miss Charm creates opportunities for contestants to demonstrate their communication and behavioral skills, show off their physical beauty and catwalk skills, as well as to interact with and promote Vietnamese culture to international friends. The fresh, energetic images of the girls are updated quickly.
However, because it was the first time it was held, Miss Charm could not avoid shortcomings and mistakes.
The swimsuit competition with the theme "The Spring Beach" on February 9th encountered mixed opinions on beauty pageant forums. The general comments from the audience were that the camera angles were messy, confusing, and the crew members were stuck in the frame.
A member commented on the Miss Charm homepage: "The camera angle is not good, the close-up or transition is not reasonable. If the camera angle was kept in place, the video would likely be more beautiful. The organizers should learn from the experience in the semi-finals and finals, otherwise it will affect the international audience's view and the reputation of the contest."
The camera lens often focuses on the judges instead of focusing on the contestants’ physique and skills. Typically, Olivia Aten’s performance, representing Indonesia, only lasted a few seconds. This made her fans angry.

Responding to criticism, the Organizing Committee representative apologized and accepted responsibility for failing to control shortcomings during the important competition.
"We regret that the program did not meet everyone's expectations. This has affected the image of the contestants performing, especially the emotions and follow-up of the broadcast viewers. We apologize for this shortcoming," Miss Charm's President shared.
Explaining further, Ms. Thuy Nga said that the team responsible for this competition is from the sponsor, while the semi-finals and finals will be handled by other professional units. The representative of Miss Charm hopes that the audience will focus on the upcoming competition night.
Disappointing sharing from Miss Charm President
Normally, international beauty pageants such as Miss Universe, Miss Grand International... livestream the semi-finals so that fans and audiences can easily follow and evaluate potential contestants before the final round. On the contrary, Miss Charm does not apply this method.
According to the plan, the Miss Charm semi-finals took place on the evening of February 13. At the last minute, the Organizing Committee did not provide any relevant information, causing fans to rush to find a live viewing link. However, it was later reported that filming and photography were prohibited on the night of the competition and were only recorded by the crew for replay the next day.
Miss Charm's fanpage has received numerous comments criticizing the contest for not prioritizing professionalism. They believe that the Organizing Committee should have an official announcement about the time, location and format of the semi-final night so that fans do not have to wait.

An audience messaged Ms. Thuy Nga to express their anger, and the President of Miss Charm replied: "Miss Charm's homepage has never announced that it will livestream the semi-finals. I think there is no need to reassure you because many of you understand that. The organizers did not announce a livestream of the semi-finals, so why make such an assumption?"
Not only did Ms. Thuy Nga’s statement fail to appease public opinion, it also sparked a wave of fierce protests. Most viewers said that the explanation of the President of Miss Charm was unsatisfactory and even deeply disappointing.
"Miss Charm is an international contest, watched by a global audience. Not all fans understand and grasp our way of doing things, because they are too familiar with the traditional organization of Miss Universe or Miss Grand. Miss Charm is being supported, but I think the above sharing has somewhat reduced the love of the audience in other countries," a fan expressed her opinion.
Other social media users were upset and said that Miss Charm - an international beauty pageant - needs to learn more about the organization of other national competitions.
Currently, the 38 Miss Charm 2023 contestants will only have the chance to shine before the judges on the final night, the final on February 16. The new beauty queen will receive a cash prize worth100,000 USDand many other gifts.
At this point, the strong candidates have emerged. According to the Missosology website, Colombian beauty Juliana Habib Lorduy is likely to be crowned Miss. Representatives from the Dominican Republic, Russia, Venezuela and the Philippines are in the predicted top 5. Dang Duong Thanh Thanh Huyen is ranked 10th on this list.
