Diphtheria is becoming more complicated as Nghe An province (Ky Son district) has recorded one death and Bac Giang province (Hiep Hoa district) has recorded one case in close contact with the above death.

The Ministry of Health recommends that people should not be subjective and should follow the recommendations of the health sector to proactively prevent and effectively fight the epidemic.

Close contact with an infected person; contact with droplets from an infected person when breathing, coughing, sneezing... are ways to transmit diphtheria.

The incubation period of diphtheria is usually 2 to 5 days. The main clinical manifestations are fever, cough, sore throat, painful swollen lymph nodes (neck swelling), infection, systemic poisoning, with gray-white, tough, sticky pseudomembranes in the tonsils or posterior pharyngeal wall. Patients may also have myocarditis, neurotoxicity leading to death due to bacterial exotoxins. The mortality rate is about 5-10%.

Vaccination against diphtheria is the most important and effective disease prevention measure, especially the implementation of diphtheria vaccination in the Expanded Immunization Program. Children under 1 year old need to start being vaccinated against diphtheria with vaccines containing full dose of diphtheria.
