Close contact with an infected person; contact with droplets from an infected person when breathing, coughing, sneezing... are ways to transmit diphtheria.
The incubation period of diphtheria is usually 2 to 5 days. The main clinical manifestations are fever, cough, sore throat, painful swollen lymph nodes (neck swelling), infection, systemic poisoning, with gray-white, tough, sticky pseudomembranes in the tonsils or posterior pharyngeal wall. Patients may also have myocarditis, neurotoxicity leading to death due to bacterial exotoxins. The mortality rate is about 5-10%.
Vaccination against diphtheria is the most important and effective disease prevention measure, especially the implementation of diphtheria vaccination in the Expanded Immunization Program. Children under 1 year old need to start being vaccinated against diphtheria with vaccines containing full dose of diphtheria.
