Memorable Tet holidays of Nguyen Tien Linh

Tien Linh and the Vietnamese team just had a memorable tournament at the AFF Cup 2022. At the tournament, although Vietnam only finished second, Tien Linh alone left his mark as one of the two players who scored the most goals in the tournament with 6 goals. After the tournament, this striker returned home to prepare for Tet and our conversation wandered back to the early days of spring, Tien Linh excitedly said: "I joined the national team in 2018 and won the AFF Cup that year, but after that, Tet 2019 did not make me remember as much as 2020, because at that time my family in Hai Duong had all the relatives present."

Tien Linh said that he and his parents live in Binh Duong, but every year around the 27th or 28th of Tet, they return to their hometown in Hai Duong to celebrate Tet with both their families. It is not until the 4th that his family returns to Binh Duong.

“Before Tet 2020, we were actually a bit sad because we had just competed unsuccessfully in the 2020 AFC U23 Championship finals, being eliminated from the group stage. However, that could not fill the joy when we won the 2019 SEA Games gold medal after 60 years of waiting. At that time, I was awarded a fairly large sum of money, so I took out some money to buy tickets for my uncles to return home to celebrate Tet with everyone. Besides, I also bought gifts and lucky money for everyone in the house, making the atmosphere as bustling as Tet. That year, my parents and I were really happy, because it had been a long time since the family had gathered together like that on the first day of the year. For me, the happiest Tet is when everyone in the family is together!”, Tien Linh recalled.

However, not every Tet with everyone present is happy. That said, Tien Linh said that once when he was about 10 years old, he had to hitchhike a container truck from an acquaintance to go home for Tet. The reason was that at that time his grandfather was seriously ill, so his parents had to go home first and Tien Linh was in Hai Duong 3 days later. That year, everyone in the family was present, but no one could be happy because his grandfather passed away right at the time of Tet. For a 10-year-old boy like Tien Linh, he had not yet felt much pain from losing a loved one, but this striker still remembers that it was the saddest Tet of his family.

Living in Binh Duong, but it has been a long time since he and his parents were able to celebrate Tet here, it was not until early 2021 that his family had that opportunity. Tien Linh shared: “Tet 2021, the Covid-19 epidemic broke out in Hai Duong province, not to mention the complicated progress of the epidemic everywhere, so everyone was safe wherever they were, so my family had to celebrate the New Year in Binh Duong.

To be honest, it has been a long time since my parents and I celebrated Tet here and Tet during the pandemic has many interesting things. That year, my family still had apricot blossoms, peach blossoms, banh chung and all the necessary things to welcome the new year, but in reality, everything was packaged and limited. Because of the pandemic, not many people visited each other's houses to celebrate Tet, so buying too much would only create excess, and then it would be wasted after Tet. That's what my mother said, but I really didn't care much. During the last days of the year, my younger brother and I only helped my parents clean the house, and my parents took care of all the shopping in the house."

Tien Linh always likes to bring joy to orphans in difficult circumstances.

Preparing to turn 26, player Nguyen Tien Linh has had memorable Tet holidays in his life, most of which are related to football.
