Some flights during the 2025 Lunar New Year holiday are fully booked. Airlines have planned to add more aircraft and increase capacity to meet people's travel needs.
Implementing the Government's directive and the direction of the Ministry of Transport, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has proactively requested airlines to develop and deploy plans to serve the Lunar New Year 2025 early, including nighttime operations to best serve people returning to their hometowns and traveling during Tet.
As every year, the demand for travel on flights from the Southern region, especially Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi and the Central and Northern provinces such as Hai Phong, Thanh Hoa, Vinh, Quang Binh, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen or the Central Highlands region increased dramatically before Tet and in the opposite direction after Tet 2025.
Specifically, on the first official holiday (January 25, 2025, the 26th day of the 12th lunar month of the year of the Dragon), the booking rate on flights from Ho Chi Minh City to most localities reached over 50%. Of which, some routes reached over 90% to 100% booking rate such as: Ho Chi Minh City - Hue (99.31%), Ho Chi Minh City - Pleiku (100%), Ho Chi Minh City - Tuy Hoa (100.24%), Ho Chi Minh City - Quy Nhon (100%), Ho Chi Minh City - Quang Binh (100%)...
Meanwhile, in the opposite direction, the booking rate is very low. Flight routes Hue-Ho Chi Minh City (12.2%), Pleiku-Ho Chi Minh City (12.85%), Tuy Hoa-Ho Chi Minh City (7.73%), Quy Nhon-Ho Chi Minh City (5.66%), Quang Binh-Ho Chi Minh City (15.66%)...
On January 24, 20255 (December 25, Giap Thin year) and January 26, 2025 (December 27, Giap Thin year), that is, 1 day before and after the first holiday, the booking rate also showed a similar trend to the routes that currently have high booking rates ranging from 93-100%, such as: Ho Chi Minh City-Hue, Ho Chi Minh City-Pleiku, Ho Chi Minh City-Tuy Hoa, Ho Chi Minh City-Quy Nhon, Ho Chi Minh City-Quang Binh. The opposite direction has a low booking rate, mostly below 20%.
At the end of the holiday, especially on the last day of the holiday (February 2, 2025), the booking rate showed a clear increase on flights from the locality to Ho Chi Minh City, reaching an average of about 75%. In particular, some routes had a booking rate of reaching or approaching 100% such as: Pleiku-Ho Chi Minh City (100%), Tuy Hoa-Ho Chi Minh City (100.56%), Thanh Hoa-Ho Chi Minh City (99.56%), Quy Nhon-Ho Chi Minh City (100%), Dong Hoi-Ho Chi Minh City (100.76%), etc.
On the other hand, the average booking rate is only about 10%.
For main routes such as Ho Chi Minh City-Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City-Hanoi, Hanoi-Da Nang, Hanoi-Ho Chi Minh City, the occupancy rate during the period from January 25 to February 2, 2025 (ie December 26 to January 5 of the lunar calendar) is still not high, reaching an average of 15-20%.
Survey on economy class ticket prices on January 21, 2025 (December 22, Giap Thin year - the period before the holiday) of Vietnamese airlines for the Ho Chi Minh City - Hanoi route, which is the most frequent route and also the route with the largest number of passengers, Vietnam Airlines offers tickets for about 3.7 million VND/way; Vietjet Air has prices ranging from 2.9-3 million VND/way; Bamboo Airways has prices of about 3.7 million VND/way; Vietravel Airlines has prices of about 2.9 million VND/way.
For the Ho Chi Minh City-Hue and Ho Chi Minh City-Quy Nhon routes on this day, the ticket price is also 2.37 million VND/way for Vietnam Airlines and 2.4 million VND/way for Vietjet Air.
For flights approaching the departure date of January 25, 2025 (the start date of the holiday), ticket prices have increased or decreased differently between airlines such as Ho Chi Minh City - Hanoi route, Vietnam Airlines and Bamboo Airways provide tickets maintained at around 3.6 million VND/way; Vietjet Air has a price of around 3.6 million VND/way, an increase of 20% compared to the time before the holiday; Vietravel Airlines sells tickets at around 3.4 million VND/way, an increase of 17% compared to the time before the holiday.
On some other domestic routes, ticket prices announced by Vietnamese airlines also recorded a slight increase compared to the time before the holiday.
Regarding ticket prices for the peak period after Tet on February 2, 2025 (the last day of the holiday), Hanoi-Ho Chi Minh City route, Vietnam Airlines and Bamboo Airways ticket prices are about 3.6 million VND/way; Vietjet Air has a price of about 3.6-3.7 million VND/way; Vietravel Airlines is about 3.7 million VND/way.
After this peak period, on February 7, 2025 (ie 5 days after the end of the Tet holiday), Vietnam Airlines and Bamboo Airways ticket prices remained at 3.6 million VND/way; Vietjet Air had prices ranging from 3.1-3.7 million VND/way, down 16% compared to the previous time; Vietravel Airlines offered tickets in the range of 3.1-3.4 million VND/way, down 19% compared to the previous time.
In preparation for the peak season of the Lunar New Year 2025, Vietnamese airlines have planned to add more aircraft and increase capacity on domestic and international routes.
Specifically, Vietjet Air plans to add 6 more aircraft (owned, dry leased and wet leased) and Vietnam Airlines plans to add 5 more aircraft (dry leased and wet leased).
During the period from January 14 to February 12, 2025, Vietnamese airlines will provide more than 6.9 million seats on international and domestic routes with an average of 227,000 seats/day, an increase of 4% compared to Lunar New Year 2024. The total number of seats provided on domestic routes will be approximately 4.8 million seats (an average of 160,000 seats/day), an increase of about 3.5% compared to the same period in 2024. The total number of seats provided on international routes will reach more than 2.1 million seats (an average of nearly 71,000 seats/day), an increase of 4.6% compared to the same period in 2024.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam continues to monitor demand on domestic routes to direct and coordinate with airlines and airports to supplement capacity on routes with high booking rates to meet air transport demand during the Lunar New Year.
