According to data recently released by the General Department of Customs, the number of imported cars in 2022 reached 173,467 units.
This is the year with the highest number of imported cars ever, far exceeding the results of the previous record year, 2021, with nearly 160,000 vehicles.
Specifically, in December 2022, the country imported 21,895 completely built-up cars of all kinds, with a total turnover of 431.55 million USD. This is the month with the second highest number of imported cars in 2022 (the highest month was November 2022 with nearly 23,000 cars).
In the whole year of 2022, Vietnam imported 173,467 cars of all kinds, with a total turnover of 3.84 billion USD, an increase of 8.5% in volume and 5.1% in turnover compared to 2021.
Car imports increase to record level in 2022
Thus, 2022 is the year with the highest number of imported cars ever, far exceeding the results of the previous record year, 2021, with nearly 160,000 vehicles.
Indonesia and Thailand are the two largest import markets. Notably, Indonesia has surpassed Thailand in the number of imported cars, but Thailand is still number 1 in terms of car import turnover. Specifically, in 2022, Vietnam imported 72,671 cars from Indonesia, worth more than 1.05 billion USD; while Thailand's result was 72,032 cars, worth 1.43 billion USD. China ranked third with 17,340 cars, worth 714.5 million USD.
With 162,043 vehicles, the three markets above alone account for 93.4% of imported vehicles nationwide, even exceeding the total imported vehicle volume of the whole year 2021.
