A man in Gia Loc almost lost 450 million VND because of a person impersonating a police officer.

On the morning of October 4, Mr. NVN, born in 1971, residing in Hong Hung commune, Gia Loc (Hai Duong) received a phone call from a stranger claiming to be an officer of the Hanoi City Police Department informing him that Mr. N. was involved in human trafficking, transnational fraud and money laundering.

The subject asked Mr. N. to buy a new phone, rent a room at a motel for work convenience, and keep the entire content of the conversation confidential.

Confused by the unexpected call, Mr. N. followed the subject's request. When he was sure that Mr. N. had entered the motel, the subject instructed Mr. N. to download the Viber application on his new phone and make a video call so that Mr. N. could observe images of some people wearing police uniforms and the People's Procuracy working to increase trust.

After a conversation lasting more than 2 hours, the subject asked Mr. N. to provide personal information and bank account to serve the investigation. Mr. N. told the subject that he had nearly 450 million VND in savings at SeABank. Immediately, the subject asked Mr. N. to withdraw all of his savings, open a new account at Vietcombank, deposit money into it and provide the subject with the OTP code.

Due to his panic and eagerness to clear his name, at around 2 p.m. the same day, Mr. N. took his savings book and went to SeABank Gia Loc branch to withdraw money. However, on the way, Mr. N. calmed down and turned to Gia Loc District Police to report.

Gia Loc District Police officers have informed and explained to Mr. N. about current forms of fraud and asked him not to make money transfers.

Mr. N. then returned home and did not make the money transfer as planned.
