Mr. Chuong had a re-examination at Bach Mai Hospital on December 18.

On December 18, Mr. Chuong and his father went to Bach Mai Hospital, where they organized a re-examination for all the victims of the mini-apartment fire in Khuong Ha that occurred last September. After the examination, the doctor concluded that he had memory loss and poor eyesight - the after-effects of the fire.

"Exams at both Bach Mai Hospital and Hospital 108 concluded that Chuong had a memory disorder. The doctors tested his IQ on a 5-point scale, and my son was at the lowest level," Mr. Nguyen Van Chuc, 68 years old, Chuong's father, added.

The after-effects have made life difficult for Mr. Chuong, who is no longer as quick as before. All activities require supervision and reminders from his parents. He does not recognize acquaintances, and rarely mentions his wife and children, who died in the fire. Every day, the man can only do simple tasks like sweeping the yard, and when he goes out, he often forgets the way home, so he needs someone to accompany him.

Every day, Mr. Chuc and his wife take turns taking their child to the Central Acupuncture Hospital for rehabilitation treatment, which costs about 20 million VND a month. He is given a long-term medical leave with full pay.

Mr. Chuong was the most seriously injured victim in the mini apartment fire in Khuong Ha. Chuong worked at the 21st Information Brigade, Border Guard, and lived in an apartment on the 8th floor. A few hours after the fire broke out, he was taken to the hospital in a deep, critical coma, with his lungs blackened by toxic smoke. Doctors actively washed his lungs, and on the 6th day of hospitalization, the aspirated lung fluid was still pitch black.

Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Xuan Co, Director of Bach Mai Hospital, said that from the moment the patient was admitted, the doctors determined that this was a very serious case, with the possibility of death. The hospital organized 27 hospital-wide consultations, with the participation of leading experts, to come up with the best treatment regimen. After two months, he was discharged from the hospital, and the doctors assessed this as a "spectacular recovery case".

In addition to Mr. Chuong, about 40 other victims of the fire also came to Bach Mai Hospital for re-examination. They were examined and comprehensively assessed for their health through tests, X-rays, and clinical examinations in cardiovascular, respiratory, ENT, neurological, and psychiatric specialties.

Most patients have recovered and returned to normal life. Like Dr. Vu Thi Nhung, after the fire she was hospitalized with multiple organ inflammation, deep coma, heart and lung damage, and severe acidosis. After nearly a month of intensive treatment, her health has improved and she is now working at the Bach Mai Pathology Center.

The mini apartment fire in Khuong Ha occurred at midnight on September 12, 2023. This apartment building has 9 floors, an attic, with about 45 apartments and more than 150 people. Hanoi police determined 56 people died and 37 were injured.
