Winter is not cold

The warm clothes I no longer wear can be gifts for children in the highlands, hopefully helping them have a warm winter.

Early in the morning when the alarm clock rang to wake me up to go to school, I started to feel shy because it was really cold.

I wish today was the weekend so I could sleep in a warm blanket and have lunch with delicious dishes my mother cooked. Braised fish, perch soup with bitter greens, grilled meat... Oh! Just thinking about it makes me not want to get out of bed.

But it seemed like my mother was calling me down for breakfast. Outside, the northeast wind rustled the leaves.

Going down to the living room, I saw my mother folding a pile of winter clothes. The sweaters I wore a few years ago would look funny if I wore them again because they were too short at the waist. My mother also washed and folded the school uniform jackets from 6th grade. I found it strange, because I couldn't fit into those shirts anymore, and she was throwing them away now, so I approached and asked:

- Mom is going to take these shirts out to look at to remember how fast you two have grown up, right?

While folding the clothes neatly into small bags, Mom said that this weekend Uncle Hung's family will travel to Sapa. Mom planned to send these warm clothes to the children in the highlands. There was a flood there recently. Many houses were damaged so the children there might not have warm clothes to wear.

Hearing my mother say that, I suddenly remembered that last weekend, my homeroom teacher reminded my class to donate warm clothes to the children in the highlands. I had 3-4 new, worn-out winter coats that I was planning to wake up early to wash again and bring to the school, but I forgot. Luckily, my mother had washed and folded them neatly, so I could ask her to pack them carefully to bring to class to give to my children there.

A few years ago, I had the opportunity to go to Lang Son with my parents in the winter. I saw the children there wearing only thin clothes going to the fields with their parents. They did not have many warm clothes because the volunteer groups had sent many but it was still not enough. Seeing the children huddled in thin clothes in the freezing cold made me feel very sorry for them.

After that time, when I got home, I invited some classmates to bring winter clothes to the Red Cross of the city to ask them to help us deliver them to charity events. The warm clothes we could no longer wear, but they could be a practical gift to help the children in the highlands. There, they still lack a lot. Some of them have to walk more than ten kilometers through the forest to get to school. On cold days, they must have had a hard time. If they had warm clothes, their difficulties would have been lessened and they would have more determination to go to school.

We in the lowlands are many times happier. Going to school is not as difficult as it is for you. School facilities are also more spacious. Many families are worried about their children being cold and take them to school by car...

This afternoon after school, I definitely have to invite my close friends to collect winter clothes to send to Uncle Hung's family to give to the kids.

Hope our small gift will help you in the highlands of Sapa have a winter that is not cold.
