A lie may get you out of trouble for a moment, but in the long run, it can destroy people's trust.
During recess, the whole class was buzzing about Lan. She was not an outstanding student but was obedient and quiet. But yesterday, Lan was discovered by the school's Youth Union Secretary using her phone during class.
During chemistry class, while the whole class was engrossed in the lecture, Lan sat at the back of the class, engrossed in Facebook and replying to messages. She did not hand in her phone as required but secretly used it. Suddenly, the Secretary of the Youth Union came to check. After observing Lan for about five seconds, he gently called her out. Startled, Lan quickly hid her phone but it was too late because the teacher had seen everything.
Lan stood up and quietly asked the chemistry teacher for permission to go out. When she reached the hallway, the teacher solemnly asked her to hand in her phone and return to class to continue studying. At that time, only a few students knew about the incident. But during recess, the news spread throughout the class. Everyone was surprised that Lan dared to violate school rules, even though the teacher had repeatedly reminded her.
The story reached the homeroom teacher's ears. She did not scold, just quietly said:
- I know that there is a student in my class who used his phone during class and was caught by the Youth Union Secretary. I have reminded him many times, but there are still students who deliberately violate the rule.
She turned to Lan and asked gently:
- Why do you use your phone in class?
Lan bowed her head, hesitantly:
- I… I asked the class monitor for permission because I had an urgent family matter. After that, I intended to hand in my phone, but the class monitor said it was almost time, so I didn't need to hand it in anymore.
The whole class was silent, eyes wide open, mouths wide open. Everyone was surprised not because Lan used her phone, but because she was willing to blatantly lie, dragging the class monitor into her story.
The homeroom teacher looked at the whole class, then sighed. But the matter did not stop there. When she was about to invite the parents to the meeting, Lan hurriedly said:
- My grandmother is seriously ill and is in the hospital! I don't want my parents to worry about her and think about me at the same time!
Hearing this, the homeroom teacher paused. She decided to postpone the handling so that the family could have time to take care of her. But just the next day, the truth was revealed. A classmate who lived near Mrs. Lan's house said that when he passed by her house, he saw that her aunt was still healthy, she even went out to the garden to pick grass, so how could she have been hospitalized?
This truth stunned the whole class. Some of our classmates whispered: "I can't believe it! How could he say such a thing?", "If his grandmother knew about this, how sad would she be?", "If something really happens in the future, who would believe him anymore?", these thoughts kept dancing in our heads.
When everything was revealed, Lan could no longer hide it. She went to see her homeroom teacher, bowed her head and apologized. The teacher listened quietly, then said in a low voice:
- The biggest mistake is not using the phone during class, but lying over and over again, even using family as an excuse. Do you know how big the consequences of this lie are?
Lan was silent. She knew she was wrong. A small lie at first, seemingly harmless, but then to cover it up, she continued to lie. The lies followed one another like a spiral that could not be stopped, and in the end, she could no longer escape.
The next day, the homeroom teacher announced to the class:
- Lan admitted her mistake. She hopes this will be a lesson for all of us. The school will punish her according to the regulations, and her conduct will be downgraded to poor.
The whole class was silent. Lan bowed her head, feeling regret weighing heavily on her heart. She had lost the trust of her friends and teachers, and more importantly, she realized that she had been wrong from the start. A lie can help us get out of trouble for a moment, but in the long run, it can lose people's trust. And when trust is lost, it is very difficult to regain. Seeing that Lan knew her mistake, we came to encourage her and reminded each other not to make the same mistake as Lan.
