Record rainfall set at nearly 700mm

Mr. Nguyen Duc Hoa, National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, said that in September 2024, there were many days of showers and thunderstorms across the country, with some days of moderate and heavy rain.

In the Northern region, there have been two widespread heavy rains.

Phase 1 from September 7-11 and phase 2 from September 21-22. In phase 1, due to the influence of storm No. 3, the Northern region had heavy to very heavy rain with total rainfall ranging from 200-400mm, some places over 500mm, especially in Dinh Hoa (Thai Nguyen) rainfall up to 612mm, Tam Dao (Vinh Phuc) 683mm.

In the Central region, there were heavy rains from September 6-7 and September 10-12 in the North Central region and from September 17-23 in the North and Central Central regions. The rains from September 17-23 were affected by the tropical convergence zone and the circulation of storm No. 4. The Central region had widespread rain with total rainfall ranging from 200-400mm, some places more than 500mm, especially in Huong Son (Ha Tinh) with 636mm of rain. In the Central Highlands and the South, there were many days of moderate rain, heavy rain and thunderstorms. Many meteorological stations nationwide observed daily rainfall values exceeding historical values for the same period.

In general, in September 2024, the total rainfall in most places across the country is generally 20-80% higher than the average of many years, and in some places even higher. In particular, the Northern region and some places in the Central region have rain 100-200% higher, and in some places it is 4 times higher than the average of many years. In particular, some places in the mountainous areas of the Northwest and the South have rain at a level approximately equal to the average of many years, and the South Central region has rain 20-50% lower than the average of many years in the same period.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, it is forecasted that in October, the total rainfall nationwide will be approximately at the average level of many years, with the total rainfall in the Central region being 10-30% higher than the average of many years in the same period.

It is forecasted that from now until the end of 2024, storm and tropical depression activities in the East Sea are likely to appear at levels close to or higher than the average of many years.

The number of storms and tropical depressions making landfall may be higher than the average of many years and will be concentrated in the Central and Southern regions. At the same time, it is necessary to be on guard against the possibility of storms and tropical depressions forming right in the East Sea.

Thus, heavy rains will be concentrated towards the end of the year, especially in the Central region, increasing the risk of prolonged flooding, widespread flooding, flash floods, and landslides in this area.
