Indian laptops will cost just under 4.5 million VND

Jio, a subsidiary of India's Reliance Group, is about to launch a laptop priced at just 15,000 rupees (about $184).

According to Reuters, Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Group is famous for its strategic low-cost products. The group's Jio telecommunications company launched a low-cost 4G package and free voice messaging service in 2016, and the $81 JioPhone 4G in 2021 in the billion-people market.

According to Reuters sources, the new low-cost laptop called JioBook will be integrated with a 4G SIM card and sold to customers such as schools and government agencies from this October.

JioBook will be available to individual users within the next three months. The company hopes to sell hundreds of thousands of JioBooks by March 2023, the source said.

The JioBook will run on the JioOS operating system and come with a number of Microsoft apps pre-installed. It will use a Qualcomm chip and Arm Ltd technology, and will compete with similar products in the same price range from Acer, Lenovo and Lava.

According to the source, the success of JioBook is expected to be no less than the previous JioPhone.

According to market research firm Counterpoint Research, JioPhone is India’s best-selling smartphone brand, accounting for a fifth of the market in the past three quarters and 9% of the country’s smartphone sales.

Jio is India's largest telecom company with over 420 million customers. The company has not yet confirmed the leaked news about JioBook.

According to sources, the JioBook computer will use the JioOS operating system, some Microsoft office applications will be available in the device.

The JioBook will compete with a handful of other budget laptops from companies like Acer, Lenovo and Indian conglomerate Lava in the market.

Despite the price advantage, buyers may hesitate to buy the computer as people in India are used to using computers running on Microsoft Windows operating system, sources said.

Currently, in India, HP and Dell are the two companies that have the largest market share in laptops.
