The death toll in clashes in Syria's coastal region has risen to 1,018, including 745 civilians.
The official SANA news agency reported that the Syrian interim government has increased the deployment of security forces to Latakia, Jableh and Baniyas further south, to restore order.
Meanwhile, Education Minister Nazir al-Qadri announced the closure of schools from March 9-10 in Latakia and Tartus provinces due to unstable security conditions.
The move comes amid escalating military tensions in the Middle Eastern country since March 6. The latest figures from the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) show that the death toll from clashes in Syria's coastal areas has risen to 1,018, including 745 civilians.
These are the bloodiest clashes in Syria since the previous regime collapsed last December.
Faced with the above situation, Syrian interim government officials reaffirmed their commitment to protecting national unity and ensuring the safety of the people.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) expressed deep concern over reports of escalating violence and civilian casualties in the coastal areas of Syria, particularly in Latakia and Tartous.
The ICRC Mission in Syria calls on all parties to take immediate measures to protect civilians and uphold humanitarian principles, as well as ensure access to health care facilities and protect medical personnel.
