Greece offers free vacations to tourists after wildfires

A free week-long holiday on the Greek island of Rhodes in 2024 will be awarded to tourists who had to cut their trips short due to the wildfires in July 2023.

Last month, a fire broke out in the center of the Greek island of Rhodes and spread to the coast, a popular tourist destination, forcing more than 20,000 tourists and locals to leave their homes or beachside hotels.

The Greek government said the situation on the island of Rhodes has now returned to normal, but the fire has caused many inconveniences for tourists. "For all those whose vacations were cut short by the wildfires, the Greek government, in coordination with the local authorities, will offer a free week's holiday in Rhodes, in the spring or autumn. We will ensure that our guests can return to Rhodes and enjoy the natural beauty of the island," the Greek Prime Minister said.

Tourism has been a key driver of Greece's economy, helping it emerge from its debt crisis in 2018. Greece's sunny islands attract visitors from across Europe in the summer, particularly from the UK and Germany, with Rhodes, the ninth-largest island in the eastern Mediterranean, a popular holiday destination.

Like most Greek islands, Rhodes residents rely heavily on tourism for jobs and income. However, the damage to infrastructure following the fire and increased visitor concerns could mean a slow recovery for Rhodes’ tourism industry.

A recent report by Moody's warned that heatwaves could reduce the attractiveness of southern European destinations in the long term, or at least reduce demand this summer and damage the region's economy.
