Two models of traditional markets to reduce plastic waste were built at Cuoi Market (Gia Loc town) and Toan Thang Market (Toan Thang commune).
On October 28-29, Gia Loc District Youth Union launched two models of "People's markets to reduce plastic waste" at Cuoi Market (Gia Loc town) and Toan Thang Market (Toan Thang commune). These are two large markets in the district, with a large volume of goods bought and sold every day, and people use a lot of plastic to store goods.
Each model has 15-20 youth union members participating. The youth union members focus on propagating to help people limit the use of plastic bags to carry goods; clearly recognize the harmful effects of plastic bags on the environment; limit the use of single-use plastic items such as plastic straws, bowls, and plastic spoons. When going to the market, they should use baskets to carry things, use plastic bags made from environmentally friendly materials, reusable boxes, etc.
The two units distributed nearly 400 leaflets about plastic waste to vendors and market-goers.
After the pilot implementation, at the end of this year Gia Loc District Youth Union will evaluate, learn from experience and replicate the model if it is effective.
