On July 14, a leading figure of the Hamas Islamist movement said the force had just withdrawn from ceasefire negotiations in Gaza in protest at Israel's "attacks".

According to the source, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh has informed international mediators Qatar and Egypt of his suspension of participation in the negotiations, following a proposal first proposed by US President Joe Biden in May. Mr. Haniyeh made it clear that Hamas would suspend the negotiations due to Israel's lack of seriousness, continued delays and obstructions, while continuing to carry out attacks on civilians with serious consequences.

Earlier, in a statement released late on July 13, Mr. Haniyeh said he had called mediators and other countries to urge pressure on Israel to stop its attacks.

In a related development, another Hamas official confirmed that Mohammed Deif - a military commander of the movement - continued to work after an Israeli bomb attack on the southern Gaza Strip. Figures from the Gaza Health Authority said the attack killed 92 people.

Israel believes Mohammed Deif was one of the people who directed Hamas to carry out the October 7, 2023 attack on the south of the country.
