Hai Duong farmers have planted more than 6,500 hectares of early winter crops, an increase of nearly 1,000 hectares over the same period last year. Early winter crops often have higher value than main-season crops.
According to the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, by October 6, localities in the province had finished planting early winter crops, faster than the same period last year. Farmers planted more than 6,500 hectares of early winter crops, an increase of nearly 1,000 hectares over the same period and reaching over 31% of the total crop planting plan. Hai Duong is one of the leading localities in the Northern region in terms of early winter vegetable growing area. Gia Loc and Nam Sach districts are the two localities with the largest early winter vegetable growing area in the province with over 1,000 hectares.
Early winter crops are usually heat-tolerant varieties such as cabbage, kohlrabi, cauliflower, squash, pumpkin and some other leafy vegetables. They are grown on the harvested summer-autumn vegetable or early tea rice fields. Early winter crops are expected to be harvested in late October and early November and have a higher value than main-season crops. Farmers typically earn a profit of VND5-7 million/ha, depending on the type of vegetable.
The Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection recommends that farmers take advantage of favorable dry weather to quickly harvest early and mid-season tea that has ripened, freeing up land to grow key vegetables with high economic value such as onions, garlic, carrots and leafy vegetables such as cabbage, kohlrabi, cauliflower, etc.
