Hai Duong proactively takes water for winter-spring crop

According to Vietnam Electricity (EVN), the assessment of the hydrometeorological situation in the remaining time of the flood season and the last months of 2023, the amount of water flowing into reservoirs in the Red River basin is 30-50% less than the average of many years. Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant is expected to carry out mandatory periodic equipment replacement, so during the water discharge to serve the winter-spring crop in 2023-2024, it will only be able to operate a maximum of 7/8 units, leading to the risk of water shortage compared to previous years.

To proactively provide water for the 2023-2024 winter-spring crop and adapt to seasonal water shortages, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development requests the People's Committees of districts, cities, towns, and enterprises exploiting irrigation works to actively direct the development of plans to take water for the 2023-2024 winter-spring crop in just 2 batches, with the latest completion date around February 25, 2024.

Focus on checking, reviewing and promptly repairing and maintaining irrigation systems, machinery and equipment managed by localities and units. Ensure that 100% of irrigation machinery, equipment and facilities operate properly to provide water for production.

Areas likely to experience difficulties in irrigation water supply should consider switching cropping patterns from rice to crops with lower water requirements in areas that are frequently experiencing difficulties in water resources.

Districts, cities and towns proactively develop and implement water intake plans in accordance with local planting plans, cropping season structures, and water resource capacity. Proactively take advantage of the time when water levels on the main river system and outer rivers are high, ensuring quality for water intake. Chi Linh City needs to strictly manage water sources in reservoirs, and must not drain water from reservoirs for aquaculture or other purposes.
