Google has decided to pause the human-generated image feature in its newly launched AI tool Gemini, after the program created images of Nazi soldiers who were people of different ethnic groups.
Google's decision came after a social media user shared an image generated by Gemini with the request to "create an image of a German soldier in 1943." According to X user John L, the AI tool created four images including a white man, a black man, and two women of color. Google said it was working to address the recent issues and announced that an improved version would be released soon.
Tech companies see AI as the future for everything from search engines to smartphone cameras. But AI programs—not just those made by Google—have been widely criticized for perpetuating racial bias in their results.
Big tech companies are now being accused of launching AI products before they have been properly tested.
Google has had its share of AI product launches. Last February, the company apologized after an ad for its newly released chatbot Bard showed the program incorrectly answering a basic astronomy question. Bard is the predecessor to Gemini, which Google launched on February 8.
