Nearly 20% of customers of 4 major bank branches in Hai Duong have updated biometrics on electronic applications.

According to a quick report from the Hai Duong branch of the Big 4 group (including Agribank, VietinBank, Vietcombank, BIDV), as of 5 p.m. on June 24, the whole province had nearly 630,000 individual customers using e-banking applications. Of which, nearly 20%, equivalent to nearly 126,000 customers, had successfully updated their biometric information.

According to Decision 2345/QD-NHNN of the State Bank, from July 1, 2024, people must perform biometric authentication by face in some cases, especially when performing transactions exceeding the threshold prescribed by the State Bank.

Specifically, money transfer transactions over 10 million VND/transaction or under 10 million VND/transaction but the total amount of transactions in the day is 20 million VND or more, then the next transfer in that day must add a facial authentication method. Money transfer transactions under 10 million VND/transaction or the total transaction value does not exceed 20 million VND/day must be authenticated by Smart/SMS OTP code as usual, without the need for facial authentication.

With facial authentication, transactions are safer and more secure because the bank uses the customer's own biometric data, which has been authenticated by the Ministry of Public Security, for transactions and encryption. In addition, customer information is also protected against cybercrime risks.

However, not all transactions require biometric authentication. According to the leader of the Payment Department (State Bank), payment transactions with a clear destination, meaning transactions that have been authenticated by the payment acceptance unit, credit institution, or payment intermediary, do not require biometric authentication. For example, payment of electricity, water, tax, transportation fees, etc.

In case people do not have a chip-embedded citizen identification card, if they want to transfer money exceeding the above threshold, they can transact directly at the counter of the bank where the account is opened.

According to Hai Duong Newspaper reporters, during the process of performing biometric authentication, many people in the province encountered difficulties when they were not familiar with using smartphones, or when they brought their chip-embedded citizen identification cards close to their smartphones at a location where an NFC reader (short-range wireless connection) was installed but were unsuccessful.
