German Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser announced on December 15 that the government has decided to extend border controls with the Czech Republic, Poland and Switzerland for another three months, until March 15, 2024.

Minister Faeser stated that the German Federal Police will continue to flexibly implement all measures of both fixed and mobile police forces to enforce the above decision.

December 15 is the final date of validity of the previous extension of the control, announced by Minister Faeser on December 4.

Previous extensions have typically lasted 10 or 20 days and have drawn criticism from German politicians, including Saxony Interior Minister Armin Schuster, who last week called for border controls to be extended for another six months.

The German Federal Interior Ministry stressed that border control measures are effective and should be extended.

Since the introduction of these measures, as of December 10, Germany has recorded 2,950 cases of illegal entry at the border with the Czech Republic, 3,500 cases at the border with Poland and 3,450 cases at the border with Switzerland.

In addition, in November, the number of illegal entries into Germany decreased by 60% compared to October, down to around 7,300 cases compared to around 20,000 cases.

Minister Faeser has repeatedly stated that border controls would no longer be necessary if the European Union (EU) reformed its asylum laws and external border policy more effectively.
