Cat Ba Island welcomes visitors back after storm No. 3

Nearly a month after storm No. 3 (Yagi) made landfall, causing nearly 700 billion VND in damage, Cat Ba Island has gradually recovered, welcoming more than 35,000 visitors and 80% of hotels and restaurants are back in operation.

The center of Cat Ba town, Cat Hai district, was cleaned up, the streets were clear, nearly a month after typhoon Yagi swept through.

According to statistics from the People's Committee of Cat Hai district, storm Yagi caused nearly 700 billion VND in damage, more than 100 times the total budget revenue of the district in the first 6 months of the year.

The cross-island road connecting Cai Vieng ferry with residential areas and Cat Ba town center was littered with fallen trees after the storm and has now been cleared.

However, the forests on both sides were severely damaged, with many trees broken and uprooted, and the original green areas have not been restored. According to the local authorities, this is a special-use forest and cannot be exploited, so the forest will recover over time.

Typhoon Yagi damaged more than 4,700 houses and businesses on the island, leaving Cat Ba Island devastated. Most of the steel-framed and corrugated iron-roofed structures were blown away and collapsed.

The local government has mobilized excavators, military forces and called on people to join hands in the cleanup. Up to now, traffic routes in the entire Cat Hai district have been operating normally. Electricity, water, and Internet have all been restored.

Efforts by local authorities, businesses, organizations, and service establishments have helped tourism activities in Cat Ba gradually recover.

Since September 10, the island district is expected to welcome nearly 36,000 tourists, of which about 30,000 are international visitors.

The cafe and restaurant on 1/4 street had its roof damaged and has been repaired and is open to welcome customers.

Mr. Nguyen Quang Vinh, Vice Chairman of Cat Hai District People's Committee, said that about 80% of restaurants and hotels are ready to welcome guests back and will reach 100% by October 15.

In autumn and winter, Cat Ba is a destination especially loved by foreign tourists because of its peace and affordable prices.

In recent years, domestic tourists have formed the habit of going to Cat Ba during the low season to experience the beautiful scenery and peaceful, fresh air of the pearl island.

Local authorities also regularly organize conferences and sporting events that attract thousands of attendees.

"Athletes participating in the tournament will be accompanied by many relatives. This is a great opportunity for Cat Ba tourism to welcome more visitors, restart and actively recover after the storm," said Mr. Vinh.

LePont Cat Ba Bungalow on Cat Co 3 Street, which was destroyed by Typhoon Yagi and caused about 10 billion VND in damage, is starting to rebuild.

However, lack of materials and funding has slowed down the restoration.
