After the Indonesian derby ended with a score of 2-0 in favor of Persija Jakarta yesterday, September 23, some fans entered the field and chased the referees and members of the Organizing Committee.

The exact cause of the incident is still unknown, but videos circulating on social media show dozens of people climbing over security fences and rushing onto the pitch to attack the men in black and blue shirts. These are the organizing committee’s forces, while the referees in charge of the match were also “questioned”.

They quickly ran into the escape tunnel, while security forces immediately intervened to prevent the conflict from spreading.

Police are investigating the incident as this is not the first time riots have broken out at an Indonesian derby between two rival clubs, notably Persija Jakarta and Persib Bandung. But it is likely that the rioters were from the visiting fans.

Accordingly, in this match, Persib Bandung suffered a big disadvantage with a red card in the 28th minute, causing them to concede a goal not long after. In the second half, although the opponent also lost a man from the 63rd minute, Persib Bandung could not recover and conceded another goal to leave with a score of 0-2.

Arya Sinulingga, a senior member of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI), also claimed that these fans were a group of people from Persib Bandung.

“This is an illegal act. Persib Bandung FC is also responsible for this situation. You cannot ignore it. Whatever the reason for this incident, PSSI believes that it is unjustifiable. Violence in the football environment, especially in stadiums, is an act that should be condemned,” said Arya Sinulingga.

PSSI also sent a document requesting Persib Bandung to immediately resolve the issues of fan management. Because in the previous match between Persib and Port FC in the Asian Cup C2, there was also an incident involving fans. Persib Bandung fans were angry because their team lost to the Thai representative so they rushed onto the field to attack the referee.
