Pruning and shaping the canopy of all lychee areas, including areas that did not bear fruit last year, is necessary to help the lychee grow and develop evenly.
1. Pruning and cleaning the lychee garden:
- Pruning time: After harvest.
- Pruning techniques:
+ For trees that have been regularly pruned: use a knife to cut the entire canopy, 8 - 10cm from the previous year's cut. Prune away slanting branches, small branches, pests and some small branches to help the tree recover quickly after harvest.
+ For trees that are not pruned annually and trees with closed canopy: cut deep into the canopy surface at the branch position with a diameter of 1 - 2cm, create a raspberry-shaped canopy to shape the mother branch and reduce the height of the canopy, prune off slanting branches and diseased branches.
Pruning and shaping the canopy of all lychee areas, including areas that did not bear fruit last year, is necessary to help the lychee grow and develop evenly.
After pruning, the garden must be cleaned, weeded, and grass, dry branches, diseased branches, trash, and fallen fruit must be collected and destroyed to reduce the spread of pests and diseases to the next crop.
2. Fertilization:
- Fertilization time: Fertilize 2-3 times/year, the first time after pruning and the last time before October 10, 2022.
- How to fertilize: Apply manure: Dig a trench around the tree following the projection of the canopy with a trench surface of 20 - 30 cm wide, 30 cm deep, spread the fertilizer, cover with soil and water to keep moist. Apply inorganic fertilizer: when the soil is moist, just spread the fertilizer on the ground following the projection of the canopy, then water to dissolve the fertilizer. When the weather is dry, dissolve the fertilizer in water to water or spread the fertilizer following the projection of the canopy, lightly till the soil and water.
3. Pest control:
- For lychee gardens infected with scale insects after pruning, farmers should pay attention to collecting pruned branches and leaves and destroying them by burning or digging holes to bury them. Then use Glim 270SC or Javipas450EC, Selecron 500EC to spray to limit the spread of scale insects to the next crop.
For leaf rollers, inchworms, and nest rollers: use Repdor 250EC or Peran 50EC,… combined with a biological pesticide and spray when there are 1.5 or more worms/branch.
For canker disease: Use a blunt knife to scrape off the diseased areas (do not scrape deep into the bark) then spray the entire trunk and branches with 2% Bordeaux solution or brush the base from the ground up 1.5m.
