On the morning of April 11 (ie the 3rd day of the 3rd lunar month), at some markets such as Thanh Binh, Dong Ngo Quyen, Mac Thi Buoi street (Hai Duong city), banh troi, banh chay and ingredients for making cakes were sold in a variety of ways, with many buyers.
The crust of banh troi and banh chay is made from pure sticky rice flour and is sold from 25,000 VND/kg. Many stores also sell five-color flour. These flours include pure sticky rice and the juice of some leaves, roots, and fruits such as green from pandan leaves, red from gac fruit, purple from purple leaves... with many flavors, creating an attractive, eye-catching look. Five-color sticky rice flour costs 35,000 VND/kg. In addition to sticky rice flour, some other accompanying ingredients such as diced rock sugar costs 20,000 VND/0.5 kg bag, pre-roasted sesame costs 5,000 VND/small bag, fresh coconut fibers...
Instead of buying ingredients to make them themselves, many people choose to buy ready-made banh troi and banh chay. Banh troi costs from 7,000-10,000 VND/plate (10 balls), banh chay costs about 7,000 VND/cup (3-4 balls).
Many consumers buy ingredients and cakes on groups and markets on social networks like Facebook and Zalo at prices ranging from 55,000-65,000 VND including 1 kg of flour, sugar, and sesame with a delivery fee of 10,000-15,000 VND or free depending on distance.
Banh troi and banh chay are traditional dishes, offerings to ancestors on the Cold Food Festival.
