According to the ranking of air quality monitoring company IQAir (Switzerland) announced on November 13, New Delhi ranked first as usual, with the air quality index (AQI) reaching the "hazardous" level of 407. The financial capital Mumbai ranked 6th with an AQI of 157, while the city of Kolkata in eastern India ranked 7th with an AQI of 154.

An AQI of 400 - 500 is considered unhealthy for people in good health and dangerous for those with existing illnesses, while an AQI of 150 - 200 is uncomfortable for people with asthma, lung and heart conditions. An AQI of 0 - 50 is considered good.

Dense fog has blanketed New Delhi since the evening of November 12, pushing the AQI to an alarming 680 after midnight. The Delhi Air Pollution Control Board said that on November 12, the PM 2.5 concentration in the Anand Vihar area was within the permissible limit of 56 ppm. However, by midnight, the concentration of PM 2.5 had spiked to nearly 2,000 ppm. Areas surrounding the capital Delhi also reported hazardous levels of air pollution. The Taj Mahal, one of the seven wonders of the world, located about 250km from Delhi, was shrouded in thick smog.

Every year, the government of the greater Delhi metropolitan area bans firecrackers during Diwali, but the ban is rarely enforced.

Air quality in northern India typically deteriorates ahead of winter, when cold air traps pollutants from sources such as vehicles, industrial activities, construction dust and agricultural burning.
