Three Vietnamese players advance deep into the European Open

Duong Quoc Hoang, Luong Duc Thien and Nguyen Cong Thanh all entered the knockout round of the 2023 European Open 9-ball pool.

All three Vietnamese players above had to fall into the loser's bracket on the final day of the double qualifying round on August 10. However, they all won the decisive matches to enter the knockout round, with a total of 64 players.

Cong Thanh won the first place for Vietnam after defeating Greek player Antonis Kakaris 9-7. Before that, he was pushed to the loser's bracket by Quoc Hoang when the two compatriots met in the first match.

After beating Cong Thanh, Quoc Hoang defeated Jonas Kornmesser 9-3, but lost to Daniel Maciol in the final round of the winners' bracket. Pushed down to the losers' bracket, Vietnam's number one player defeated Pijus Labutis 9-6 to secure Vietnam's second spot in the knockout round. The third spot went to Duc Thien after he defeated Kostas Koukiadakis 9-7.

Among the eliminated players, there are experts such as Sanjin Pehlivanovic or Ko Ping Chung. However, most of the top players such as Francisco Sánchez Ruiz, Fedor Gorst, Albin Ouschan or Shane van Boening also entered the knockout round taking place today, August 11.

In the round of 32, Quoc Hoang will meet the underdog English player Imran Majid at 3pm today, Hanoi time. At the same time, Cong Thanh will meet the top Filipino player Johann Chua, while Duc Thien will meet a Greek player, Dimitris Loukatos, at 4:30pm.

The European Open is a Matchroom pool tournament, taking place from August 8 to August 13 in Fulda, Germany, featuring some of the world’s top players. The winner will receive $30,000, while those who have made it to the knockout stages are guaranteed at least $500.
